PS3 aliasing question

I dunno whether I am just very picky but I have been playing Ratchet and Clank and Uncharted etc and, even though, apparently, they are supposed to be very well anti-aliased, I find that they still have jaggies.

I use a Dell 24" 2407WFP monitor with HDMI>DVI.
The games are playing at 720p and then being made fullscreen with aspect mode.

Could it be that, because the dell is a pc monitor and an ultrasharp panel, 720p games at fullscreen just do not look exceptional? If I stick the game in 1:1 mode it seems very sharp, but you can cover the picture with two hands on the screen so it could be that it's just small and condensed.

I'm tempted to buy a normal HDTV - something like a samsung 26" (any good?) - because I think it could be the fact I am not playing on a proper HDTV in the first place.

I had the same problems with the 360 over vga, too.

In summary, games seem:

1) aliased (jaggies)
2) blurred in the background (like out of focus and very blurred/jaggy in fullscreen - 1:1 is ok)

Any ideas?

Riiya.

Can't you run it at 1080i at 1:1? That would solve your problems I think, as when using fill it doesn't just double the image to fit the screen because it's 1200 pixels tall, not 1080

Can anyone tell me if there is an actual 1080p game I can use to test? Preferably a game that uses anti-aliasing too :P ?

All the games I have tried are natively 720p.

I'm gonna go to town in the morning, too, and maybe I'll check what the ps3 looks like on the HDTV in the GAME store.

I'll give it a shot now, but I am not confident in the monitors ability to display a 1080i signal. Also, I dunno whether it will make much of a differene for the jaggies because the original 720p image is still just being scaled larger.

Regards.

Yes, but doubling is far better than doubling *and a bit*.

Nah. Doesn't work. The dell does not accept an interlaced signal - it just moans when the ps3 tries to output 1080i.

Maybe I am just being too paranoid. Maybe all 720 games have these problems on 1080p displays.

Hmm

when a 1920x1200 display receives a 1280x720 picture, it has to do a lot of scaling so it really depends on the scaler. ps3 games arent the best for jaggies, either, and ratchet and clank isnt free from them.

I would suggest that a computer monitor doesn't have the same kind of scaling/processing that a HDTV has. They're really designed to run at native resolutions. Something like the Bravia Engine will sort out subtle jaggies. I've not really noticed them whilst playing Uncharted on my TV. They have to be as bad as in 'The Darkness'.

Your monitor has a 16:10 aspect ratio. 720p/1080p are 16:9. Basically the image is being stretched so you need to set the 1:1 pixel mapping. This will of course make black bars on the bottom and top of the screen, but it's nicer than seeing all that blurry and aliased image.

As far as I can tell neither Ratchet or uncharted will only run in 720p. If I try to run them at 1080i on my tv it automatically adjusts to 720p (ie the tv actually resets itself back into 720p for that game then switches back to 1080i on the PS3 dashboard)

It's not usually an issue with the console itself, just that developers often find it difficult to get anti-aliasing to a good level while still keeping the performance fluid. We're seeing better and better anti-aliasing in PS3 games now though. Some games like Resistance and Warhawk have remarkable (4 samples) anti-aliasing, while others like The Darkness totally lack it. A lot of games that lack it are often multi-platform games. There's also the scaler - frankly put, the PS3 scaler sucks.

if you turn 720p support off from the xmb it'll play at 1080i i seem to remember

Hmm I havn't tried that (I was just going from what I have noticed).

One thing I have noticed though is that both Ratchet and Uncharted only state 720p on the back of the box. COD4 states 720p/1080i & 1080p.

If Ratchet and Uncharted work in 1080i why don't they state it on the back of the box, it just seems a little odd.

i just tried it and it does 1080i also. look sthe same as 1080p really, virtually no jaggies but it looks as if the ps3 is applying smoothing to the whole seen, making everything softer than it should be

Your 2407 doesn't display 1080i :\? My 360 runs it fine through VGA, although I have to say "No that doesn't look right" the first time otherwise there's weird lines everywhere.

I run my 360 through a 22" monitor, and have bad jaggies also. I considered getting a HDTV to try and sort it out, but have recently given up on the idea. I'll just play with the jaggies as they don't bother me that much.
