ps3 and bluray

Ive been thinking of getting a PS3 purely for Blu ray and upscaling dvd's (the xbox 360 is rubbish for that) and Ive been reading a lot about Ubuntu recently - if I put Ubuntu on the ps3 will I still be able to play Blu ray's and upscale dvd's? And will they look any different to if I was just using the PS3's software? I did hear that upscaling had a lot to do with the software used :?

Answered here, sort of. Won't work.

The PS3 is the BEST blu-ray player out there hands down. Videophiles may want to argue against me, but in all truthiness, differences in the pic quality to the visible eye are nonexistent. What the PS3 has a huge advantage on is its speed. Compared to my stand-alone it blows it out of the water with all java based menu blu-ray discs. Some of my movies can take minutes to load as appose to seconds on my PS3. This is down to the huge graphical processing power the ps3 has.
The downside to having a PS3 as your main player is its aesthetics. This is the reason I went for a standalone in my hi-fi rack. Also the remote is Bluetooth meaning your all in one won’t work.. Fan noise is evident, but only slightly. 40gigs are apparently quieter than the 80gigs. Worth noting also is my standalone also has a fan which is clearly evident in a silent room.
Anyway don’t take my word for it, goto the www.blu-ray.com forums and see for yourself what other blu-ray enthusiasts are saying.

Only take the word from people who have both a standalone and a ps3.. Which is probably a very small amount on here.

You don't exactly need much to run blu-rays, and in all actuality, the PS3 loads blu-ray slower than a lot of video blu-ray players due to the 2x read speed. It's still pretty fast though (and is the only flaw if you can even call it that). Graphical prowess has nothing to do with load speeds, the CPU does all the decoding and displaying and so on.

Blu-ray is just a bigger DvD with way more storage. It's not some new-fangled alien technology from Xenu that needs a super computer to run. The HD display simply requires slightly more processing power to decode and display, and that's about it.

Really? So why does my PS3 load a java based blu-ray in 10secs and on my BDP-300 it take 3 mins?

If you will ?

End of the day it has a HDMI port for HD audio and picture, a optical out for those who want decent surround sound but lack an amp with hdmi, the ability to upgrade firmware to support future blu-ray profiles, loads fast enough that by the time you've sat down on the sofa after putting the disk in that it's ready to go and the picture + audio quality is indistinguishable from a standalone player that costs twice as much. Not bad for £270.

Oh and its a media extender and games console too :p

[EDIT] And dvd upscaler and internet browser and it saves the world from cancer!

I loved that bit :p I wish the 360 would implement something like that but then again if the older Xenon boards ran something like that they would most likely melt into the ground or create some form of black hole...

Also, how is the PS3 with SD DVD playback upscaled to 1080p compared to a 2 year old JVC DVD recorder connected by a Component cable to a Sony 40W2000, which of the two should I use to play SD DVD's ??

I imagine it'll be quite a bit better. For starters the PS3 upscales SDDVDs, i know it's miles better than my sddvd player connected by a scart.

as I said, only listen to people that have both... Do you happen to have both Mr Kreeeeeee ?

I state the facts, graphical prowess has nothing to do with the PS3 being the best blu-ray player (which I'm not denying).

I'm glad you're back, it's funny reading your posts :)

Depending on the upscaler in your TV it could be much better or much the same. With my Samsung LE40M86BD, it already has a decent upscaler in it, so the PS3 only looks slightly better than my od Toshiba DVD player.

I can't comment on your DVD recorder, but I also have a 40w2000, and did some tests from my old Pioneer DVD player vs PS3.

Some DVDs were tough to tell.
The better quality DVDs looked better on the PS3.

To test the 40w2000 scaler, I also ran a DVD on the PS3, and paused on a large face shot of somebody.

With the scaler off, it looked fine.
However, while paused, and flicking the scaler onto Normal, you could see a fair bit more detail in the face. Some friends of mine and I were all here, looking closeup at the screen, and all agreed we could see pits and fine detail in the actors face, compared to with the scaler off.

So the 40w2000 scaler is pretty good, but not as good as the PS3 upscaler.

the ps3 does actually do things quicker than most stand alone br players, that is a fact. but most of the other stuff is pretty inaccurate. a large part of it im sure is due to the ps3's processing power in general, but not its graphical abilities.

thats interesting that. what players have drives faster than 2x? you cant even get bd readers for the pc faster than 2x unless im mistaken

pc blu-ray drives are currently 5x for reading such as the Pioneer BDC-202, and the PS3 will be getting BD Live in summer

Sony has apparently told Home Cinema Choice Magazine that their will be a PS3 firmware update for BD Live when the first BD Live standalone players are released, which is expected to be in late May or early June. BD Live allows a disc to check online each time it is inserted for new content to download.

I have been watching SD DVD's on my DVD recorder but last time I was recording something so had to use the PS3 and was amazed at the detail and sharpness of the movie, I haven't done any comparisons but as you said the upscaling of the PS3 is very good.

I think I will use the PS3 in the future, I am so glad I bought an optical cable to get 5.1 sound thru my home theather from the PS3

Anyway, what does the drives read speed matter, the speed is irrelevant for movies
