ps3 and bluray

the bdc-202 is not a 5x reader. it only reads single layer (25gb) discs at 5x. it'll read dual layers at 2x, just like the ps3.

Although I agree, for movies, the read speed is pretty irrelevant, PC drives are already getting much faster, the BDC-202 is possibly a bad example..

The LG combo GGW-H20L is 4.8x read for dual layer BD-R/ROM

However, if say speed is an issue for Java loading etc, why wouldn't Sony as and when just incrementally speed up the BR drive in the PS3 as technology increases, sure older consoles will load slower, but why penalise newer consoles just for this?

it isnt the drive speed. i mean come on, people need to think about this. some of the discs take longer to load the3 features on a standalone player than it does to load a game on the ps3, and they are using the same 2x drives (since 2x is the minimum requirement for bd playback). and since those same movie features play back fine on the ps3, it rules drive speed out completely.

I think that if they can change the BR drive at no extra cost Sony will do that, IIRC they did the same with the many PS2's they released.

Maybe they will do it when they release a smaller PS3 with smaller chips?
