Sony goes low tech with the wiring.
by IGN Staff

US, October 11, 2006 - HDMI port, Blu-Ray drive, Cell processor -- the PS3 will ship with everything needed for high definition playback. Everything except for high definition cables, that is.

The latest issue of Famitsu contains a first report on the cables that will be included with the Japanese version of the PS3. Purchasers of either the 60 Gig or 20 Gig models will get a power cord, USB cable, ethernet cable and standard composite AV cable.

That's right! No component, HDMI or D cables are included in the box! While Sony hasn't announced the wiring that will be bundled with the US version of the system, in Japan at least, those who want high definition cables will have to make a separate purchase.

On the plus side, the PS3's AV Multi Out interface accepts the same cables that you used with your PS2, so if you already have S-Video, D or Component cables, you should be able to reuse them.
Nice work Sony! :p

Scart cable as well though, not just composite. I hope this isn't true for Europe or USA, they should include at least a component cable since a lot of people will be using either that or HDMI.

This thread is inevitably going into a Sony bashing thread anyway but, if this news is correct and not just bullplop rumour, then how the hell can Sony possibly have any defence for the bad press they receive?? I mean, not including 1 single HD cable for what is essentially a HD media centre in at least the higher spec PS3, is nothing short of scandalous. I love Sony products, I have a several thousand £ of them in my house (when they were new) but I have all but lost the faith I once had in Sony.

For me when i think of the Sony brand i think of poor value for money if true this is just another reason to strengthen my view on there brand

Sony used to stand for high quality with high spec at a price people like myself didnt mind paying for not anymore they just stand for high prices

A Classic example of a market they domanated but now look shoddy in is TVs i mean there LCDs are a rip off

Truth!

They can't even measure properly.. Measured my '28"' TV the other day to find it was 26" diagonally...

imo, everything they sell has a stupid price tag on it just for the brand name, hell, I used to like Sony before I knew there were equal/better spec stuff for cheaper.

The Sony Bravia screens are fantastic and definitely up there with the elite.

If it's a regular CRT then thats always been the case.

It's kind of a bad move by Sony, though If MS can do composite and component in one cable, I don't see why Sony couldn't do that, as it gets the best of both mid-range quality cables. Composite, reasonable quality, not the best, ideally RGB, but works, component, good quality HD, but ideally you want HDMI.

Granted, I'd have thought the majority of buyers for the PS3 wont have HDTVs, so component and HDMI would be useless to them.

So, where do they pluck 28" from? Some random calculation? The depth of the tube? :p

The tubes size, measured diagonally - the visible size is always less.

However, if memory serves TV's should (for the last 5-10 years) always have the visible size clearly marked at retail.

Re the Bravia screens, they are nice (i've just spent a fortnight using a 50" one), but Sony were very cheap in some regards - 1024x768 max res if using the VGA input.

Scart only exists in Europe, they're bound to throw in the adapter for the composite lead but that's not proper (RGB) scart.

Seems an odd way of getting Blu Ray into people's homes when you can only watch it with a quarter of its detail.

Only in small text, they still advertise using the full tube size, not visible area. It's sneaky, but one of those commonly known things.

This is very much the downside, on Component the maximum resolution is usually 1024x1024 for Sony sets (I know ours is), but they limit it to 1024x768 for PC usage for screen proportions. It doesn't so much bother me because I feel Sony only did it for the sake of putting one on rather than trying to make a decent alternate solution.

They will susidise the PS3 by hundreds of pounds for bluray and they cant put a cable in!!!!!!! What a joke!

I will stick to my 360.

This has been common knowledge for some time now.

TBH how are they going to use the PS3 as a showcase for Blu-ray if they supply it with the lowest quality cable available (bar RF).

The majority of consumers will not know the difference in cable performance and think that they are getting the best available picture. I cant stand my 360 on composite and have to have it on component and this is at 480(i/p) I'd hate to see it in compoite on a TV that could do 720p or 1080p.
