PS3 codec support.

As for streaming i have NEVER gotten it to work on my Vista system to the PS3 - just will not work.

i'm presuming you fell foul of the same thing i did. Not adding the programme you're streaming it with to the windows firewall exception rules

when you enable media sharing in WMP 11 it doesnt do this by default, nor does it prompt you to. It tells you to in the instructions, but heh, instructions are for wimps !

well i'm pretty sure i DID add them, but i'm very happy to go back and check for my sanity!

let us know how you get on. i recently went back to WMP11 media sharing in vista having been told it was a doddle to set up

tryed for a second time, some months after i first tryed it and it worked first time.

Apparently MKV2VOB isnt the prefered application anymore. Try TsRemux and see if you have better sucess.

I'll give that a try but what file format should I be aiming for if I want to stream it to the PS3. Like I said, the PS3 doesn't even see .vob files unless I'm doing something wrong.

will give that a try tonight. A mate says that he uses mpeg2 through MKV2VOB which I don't think I've tried yet. mp4 and .vob don't seem to be picked up over the network. Would mpeg2 screw up the quality of the H264?

would that be just media player or the network sharing service as well? Also I seem to recall there being a media extender program in the firewall settings though the PS3 is not technically an extender if my understanding is correct?

Very much so, not to mention very long re-encode times!

ive only got the first 2 you list

the role of each being obvious. ie media player is just the client app on your PC you would use to stream off somebody elses PC, and the network sharing service itself that you use to share it to the PS3

ive allowed both through the firewall.

So if I want to stream (not copy to DVD or the internal HDD) an x264 .mkv file from the PC to the PS3, what video and audio settings should I use in MKV2VOB (or similar) to make the file readable by the PS3 over the network and be able to stream it via 85mbps homeplugs without choppiness or losing too much of the quality?

Am I asking too much from the PS3? Should I have built a media centre instead?

Since your trying to stream over the network, what are you using as your media server? It may be that the software doesnt recognise the file format and therefore isnt able to send it to your PS3.

ok I've converted one movie into .vob using MKV2VOB but the PS3 doesn't even see it on the media server. Do I only use .vob if I'm copying the file to disk?

If your streaming it then rename the .vob file to .avi - this should work.
