Sony Delays PlayStation 3
Blu-ray forcing the machine into hiding until November. by Patrick Klepek, 03/14/2006

Sony has been anything but talkative these past few months regarding their plans for PlayStation 3. No one except Sony seemed to anticipate they'd continue to meet their projected spring release date in any territory, even Japan.

Today, Sony officially conceded defeat to the recent flurry of rumors and speculation, with Japanese newspaper Nihon Keizai Shimbun reporting the machine has been pushed back until November.

There aren't many details out right now, but Sony says issues over the finalization of copy protection technology related to their Blu-ray disc drive is the cause of the delay.

When asked for a comment, a Sony Computer Entertainment America spokesperson only went on record saying that SCEI has not issued any official statement itself yet.

As the news is coming out of Japan, that creates a worrisome scenario for America and Europe. There were already rumblings Sony wouldn't be able to launch in all territories before the end of the year, but missing out on the Christmas season over here could prove a deadly blow to Sony's next-generation plans.

Somewhere in Microsoft's offices, Bill Gates just opened a bottle of champagne. With more details expected at tomorrow's PlayStation conference and the Game Developers Conference just around the corner, it appears the flood gates (for good or ill) are about to be unleashed.

It should be noted that none of this has been officially announced......Purely a newspaper report that is most likely assuming tomorrows Sony meeting has been changed to a close doors event purely because it's bad news.......

Although i reckon Nov is probably right :D

Well there was mention of a worldwide release a while back. Even if thats true the 360 will still have plenty of time to get it's act together and release some landmark titles.

I was talking to a friend recently who is going a 3d art course. Apparently the programmers at EA much prefer the 360 to the PS3. They were saying even with the ps3's slight power advantage, the 360 is far more capable at producing awsome graphics due to it's programming ease.

They just felt they could get more out of it.

Finally we're edging closer to an official confirmation of what we've all known for a long time - that we're not going to see it in Europe until 05/07 at the earliest.

Didn't we already know this a couple of months back? tbh, I don't really mind. The 360 is already a very very nice machine, it's bad to have no competition but Nintendo will be along soon.
Hopefully with the mass delays the PS3 could be released in a blaze of glory and be the ultimate console, I doubt it though.

if there is a delay (which has not officially been confirmed yet) then its not down to blue ray specifications but system production cost which is just far too high for sony to discount to a sustainable level at present

This release is a joke i am so glad i have my 360 and can enjoy next gen gaming in HD for the next year or so.

Sony have really lost the plot and when you have a big company like microsoft on your heels trying to win a large part of your market share you better be ready for it and by the looks of this and many other reports on the web sony are no where near ready not buy a long shot.

How can a company of sony size not be on the ball with what is their hottest product?

Add this delay to the high cost involved with the console and the fact that the PS3 is not much (if any) better then the already out in the shops 360 and sony have big problems.

If anyone can take sonys crown now is the time to do it and it looks like microsoft are going for the kill.........

Add nintendo into the mix and sony should be getting worried

And what effects does this delay have on the up an coming Blue Ray/HD DVD war?

By the time sony get the PS3 into most homes HD DVD will have had a huge head start like the 360 is getting now

Could this be the end of sonys domanance in the console market?

Yes because by the Time the PS3 becomes established in the EU and the US Microsoft will already have a well established foothold in the current market. And yes again because by the time the PS3 comes out in the EU/US MS will already have plans for the new xbox720 (or what ever they'll call it) which they'll use to sweat Sony with.

No, because no matter what happens Sony will Always and I mean always have the lions share of the Japanese market. And quite possibly another no because a lot of people nowadays have more money than sense and will buy the PS3 as well as the xbox360.

Seems the delay is genuine: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/4807858.stm

Not that I'm that surprised. I'm worried that the delays are being blamed on the fact the electronics and film firms have been unable to reach an agreement with regards to copy protection. Surely they've had plenty of time to sort this out, if they can't get it sorted then I wouldn't be surprised if it gets delayed even further.

To be honest I wouldn't be surprised if the PS3 isn't launched in the UK until after Xmas 07. By then if the PS3 doesn't completly blow the 360 away (and I've seen nothing to indicate it will) I think I just won't bother with one.

have i missed the plot or something - the blue ray disc isnt important to developers, ok its drastically put back release in Europe certainly and probably the US also, as its unlikely to be a world wide release

but the good thing is it gives developers a lot more time to get to know the capabilities, see what M£ can come up with and see if it can be done on the PS3, also I think while the consumer pays initally with how hard the ps2 and ps3 are to program for, in the end we get our money;s worth because the life fo the machine is extended because devs are always finding new possibilities

Yes its going to be a hard task for Sony to come back from if this is true, but the PS name in general is soooooo strong for the man on the street, there will be competition - and you never know if things are delayed maybe graphics will be more updated or something in comparison ( While nv has a fully dsigned chip, has it gone into actual production?)

Well from what i have read, most places say sony said its going to be a worldwide launch in november, so us Europeans are going to be better of that a lot of people thought before.
So how people say we wont be getting it for ages and ages must all missed that bit.
and notice the reason for the delay is the pirates who wont pay for movies and games like always got to ruin everything. you know who you are

November is a long way away. It gives the 360 almost a years head start in the market. If it is a worldwide release i'd also have doubts about Sony managing to meet demand much like Microsoft has with the 360. I'd still bet on a Japanese release first (possibly in November), with the US a month or two later with Europe tagging on 6 months after that. I'd be very suprised if Europe see it before March 2007, although a Christmas 06 release would be nice but in my opinion unlikely.

There is no way on earth Sony will be able to do a worldwide release of the PS3 in November.

We all know how expensive they are to make at the moment, so they're going to have to wait a few months for the costs to come down. Then, even if they started making them in August / September, they'd still struggle to make even enough for Japan, nevermind the US and Europe!

I predict a short supply of units for Japan before Christmas, then June / July 2007 for US & Europe once they've built the stocks up. Even if by some miracle they get the PS3 released in the UK by spring 2007, the Xbox 360 would have a massive head start, and Christmas 2006 could be a good season for MS :D

we have gone over this so many time, but now it seems it is getting official. Sony will never go down because japan will not buy the 360! no matter how good it is, and there is enough fanboys about to still buy the PS3. All I can say is its looking less and less likely I will get one, and sony are going to loose a lot of money. If we could see it coming last year why couldn't sony. They shoud have dropped the blu-ray and got it out there and had it as a add on later (ala 360 by the looks with HD-DVD)

Im just struggleing to comprehend why such a massive company has ****** up soooooo badly. Handed it to microsft on a plate.
