we have gone over this so many time, but now it seems it is getting official. Sony will never go down because japan will not buy the 360! no matter how good it is, and there is enough fanboys about to still buy the PS3. All I can say is its looking less and less likely I will get one, and sony are going to loose a lot of money. If we could see it coming last year why couldn't sony. They shoud have dropped the blu-ray and got it out there and had it as a add on later (ala 360 by the looks with HD-DVD)

Im just struggleing to comprehend why such a massive company has ****** up soooooo badly. Handed it to microsft on a plate.

So you likwe it how M$ sold you old technology ( standard dvd drve) rather than trying to improve the techology before its released? Also think of the TINY by today's standards of the M$ hard drive

M$ went to hit the public with expensive add-on's that they will make more % profit from , rather than Sony who build it into a machine they KNOW they have to make a heavy loss on and probably not being able to charge more than around £300 or so ( possibly less)

At least sony look forward, rather than M$ who give you old tech and say at launch they will be launching a new part for imminent release (hd-dvd)

Although the first versions of the Blu Ray Disc apparently wont be able to hold a great deal more anyway. Rather have a tried and tested DVD drive than an immature technology, which could potentially be the next betamax. The size of the hard drive is small, especially considering the cost, its almost disgusting.. but the size of the files planned to be saved on it are not exaclty enormous, and i wont be running out of space soon.. its adequate.

That is Sony's choice, they appear to have effectively bitten off more than they can chew and more than what the market want. 2x 1080p? i mean, please.. how much of their key audience is ever going to use that feature.. It appears as if Sony's Playstation marketing department has had their head in the sand for the last 4 years.

At least sony look forward, rather than M$ who give you old tech and say at launch they will be launching a new part for imminent release (hd-dvd)

Id rather have the new technology when it is ready than delay my console a year for an immature technology which could potentially become irrelevant.

i have yet to buy a hard drive for my 360 doesnt mean i cant use it, ok the price is bad, but i dont have 2 buy it.

I think that as said b4 sony will have the sales of the fanboys, but the average joe like me and some of my mates just bought whatever game out 1st, i.e the 360, which is where they will lose their sales

Ninty have no worries as they have the japanese market and a product that isnt trying to compete with the ps3 or 360

If you think for one second a PS3 with 60GB hard drive, Blu-Ray drive, wireless boomerang; in fact the whole kit and kaboodle is going to cost £300 or less you're living in fantasy land.

Sony's financial situation (not helped by the recent lost law suit with Immersion Tech) means they can't afford to sustain as much of a loss per unit as MS. Combine this with the higher component costs (source Merrill Lynch) of the blu-ray drive and the more expensive cell processor ($60 more than the 360's processor) imo significies a high retil price.

By the time the PS3 comes out MS will have also slashed the 360's price and I wouldn't be surprised to see 360 / HDDVD bundles for less than the retail price of the PS3.

With a larger catalogue of titles, good availability and at half the price I can see which one parents will be buying their children next christmas. Imo Sony could be in real trouble.

As has been posted in the past on this board, consoles have ALWAYS been sold for under £300, thats FACT no matter how much new technology or law suits have been applied.

Just going off history mate, nothing else - so nothing to do with fantasy land.

Yep blueray may end up being a betamax, it could also end up like the CD ( which philips and sony co-developed) so its a 50 - 50 chance, and now quite a few IT companies as well as hollywood studios are on the blueray side inparticular, against M$$ and a few others in the HD-DVD camp, its an even battle

Yes many new technologies are in this unit, but it will always be a console ( even if they want to call it a home entertainment server lol)

I have a 360 so I am no fanboy, but I am still looking forward to GT5 /6 and using my psp as a controler for the ps3

Really all depends if Sony can come up with a few MUST HAVE titles on release......

I hope your not applying that to all consoles that have been released in the past, as your wrong.

Remember the Saturn? ;)

The fact you use '$' signs in Microsofts name doesn't show you in a fair light, infact, it looks like you're a Sony fanboy.

The HDD doesn't need to be any bigger, it doesn't hold an OS and system files like a PC, I have a lot of Data in my PGR3 save, thats about 8mb big.

Sony fair with add-ons? Please! They have been the worst for the last 10 years! Multitaps, Broadband adapters, Jog-con pads (both versions), Dual Shock, Analogue, Memory Cards!
Microsoft gave ALL of those as standard when the original Xbox was released. They also did it again for the Premium model of the Xbox360! That was £280, I guarantee you the Sony PS3 won't be any cheaper, infact, I would say it would be £350 at a minimum.

You say Sony are releasing stuff cheap to get a profit without adding stuff? Don't get me started on Blu-Ray. They are pushing a format, not a gaming platform. Why? Because they want insane profits from DVD's, not games. Blu-Ray is a design they hold the rights to, one Blu-Ray movie sells, they get money from it. They are pushing Playstation (Sony's only division that pushes a REAL profit) on the back of Blu-Ray so they can make money from Movie buyers.

Also, Microsoft didn't go about robbing people with revisions! Playstation, psONE, Playstation 2, PS2. No difference at all in performance, yet 4 models in total, all charging premium rates. Disgusting.

Microsoft always announced games were their first port of call with the Xbox360, so why would they NEED a new drive technology? They already have a fast DVD-Rom in there. Most games don't take up the full DVD disc anyway, there's plenty of space on a DVD disc. Sony are only pushing Blu-Ray for future wealth, not for the benefit of any gamers who want higher-res textures (which, from stories circulating, wouldn't be able to push them at a high frame-rate anyway). Microsoft have said HD-DVD will only be used for Movies, not for games. They are making Xbox360 into a media center, whereas Sony are making the Playstation3 into future profits on the back of a non-gaming format.
Microsofts is optional.

You really should read up on things before trying so hard to knock a company thats released a top of the range console with a phenomenal gaming line-up (something Sony has NEVER managed in 10 years). Also, don't come back calling me a Microsoft fanboy... I've had every console since the NES bar the Jaguar, and will be getting a Playstation3 anyway, however, I will not be blinded by Sony's hype-wagon.

I don't think you'll find you will get the usability you are thinking from the PSP as a 'controller'.

Also, the Saturn was released at £400. The Playstation was released at £350 and quickly dropped to £300. I believe the Jaguar was over £300 aswell.

All at a premium price? The price stayed the same when they switched to the smaller version of the two consoles, around £100. They are able to do it because the cost of producing hardware falls over the consoles lifetime and they can afford to redevelop it into a smaller package. The reason MS hasn't done it is because they bought in their hardware for the X-Box and so the price has stayed higher for them. I'm sure they would have made a smaller version if it didn't cost too much, that way they could have regenerated sales like Sony did.

Phenominal gaming line up for the 360? I find that quite humourus, it was no better than any other consoles release line up, not really next gen and just a rehash of old games. The PS3 will be no better though. We'll have to wait a year or so to see any truely great games.

As for the BlueRay discs, yes Sony are using the PS3 to sell the format, it makes business sense. Aslong as it doesn't drive games cost up too much then I don't see a big problem with it. Infact there is a benifit, as a games developer mentioned, much faster loading times. As games get bigger, and they will, the 360 will seem annoyingly slow when loading from a DVD compared to the PS3 loading from Blue Ray.

i agree with most stuff nokkon said, without the revisions bit (gameboys have got better, looks at the new DS thingy) and the sony catalogue of games is good.

As for using the PSP as a controller, that will be really uncomfortable IMO

We have had this convo lots of times before on this forum and as said

the ps3 is a boat for sony to push yet another propriatary format that people dont want / need, e.g UMD, minidisk, duo memory sticks, atrac 3 (iirc) and now blueray.

Now these formats end up ruining sony's products, UMD is annoying the PSP users iirc, atrac 3 put me off buying sony's mp3 players, i cant b doing with converting my music ala Ipod style, which is a shame as i really like the look of them. Bluray AND HDDVD and both formats that IMO the consumer doesnt want or Need, a portable Hard drive or mp3 player will do for storing large amounts of data, and ive just started getting me VHS video collection updated to DVD

Not at all, the price actually climbed by £20 on all consoles at least on their revisions. PSone was selling for £150 at one point. The issue was, it was an inferior console in every way to the Xbox, yet when a revision was released it was charged at a higher price.

You talk as if the Xbox was expensive, it was selling cheaper than the Sony revisions.. so your argument doesn't hold any ground. Sony went about their advertising as if they had changed a lot of it, almost as if it were a new console.

I do agree partially. But i do forecast a rising want/need for higher storage disc media such as HD-DVD or BluRay as we see increasing definition normal television broadcast and movies.

Name a console that has a launch list that within 3 months is equal to:
Project Gotham Racing 3, Perfect Dark Zero, Call of Duty 2, Kameo, Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter, Fight Night Round 3, Burnout 4, Condemned and Dead or Alive 4.

Believe me, titles like GRAW, Fight Night, Condemned and Project Gotham Racing are very much 'Next Gen' titles.

All of those games are high quality titles that if released on any other format at this time (bar Burnout 4 obviously) would be 'Must-Buy' titles. The only problem is that so many great games have been released together that people can't afford them.

It took Sony 6 months to get their first 'Must-Buy' title on the PS2 (Gran Turismo 3 - May).

The X-Box wasn't expensive to the consumer, just to MS, which is why they couldn't revise it.

I don't remember the PSOne selling at £150, wouldn't of thought it was for long. The PS2 remained at the same price in every shop I've seen, it was just a pain in the back side to find one, a bit of a Sony muck up.

Will it actually be loading anything more substantial though? Higher textures are a massive drain on the system and with developer reports stating that there is nothing between them I can only see the textures being the same.
PC textures haven't changed in over 2 years for this reason.

It wasn't a Sony muck-up. They've always done it. If you do a release without enough consoles, but enough to cause a stir you get greater demand. It's happened with every format after the Playstation. It's very clever.

That simply depends on what games you enjoy. Most of those games are good, just not great, I'd rather play Shadow of the Colossus than anything the 360 has to offer so far.
I wouldn't call PGR3 truely next gen, yes it's quite pretty and it's the only game along side GRAW that interests me in the 360.

What do you class as next-gen?
I'd call as many polygons in a car as were in an entire city in the previous generation of consoles pretty 'next-gen'.

Although a lot can be improved (PGR2 is far better) the engine for it is certainly worthy of 'Next-Gen' status.
