My PS3 developed a problem where upon start up it would fail to see any disc inside it, i tried DVD's, Blue rays and Games. I could then eject the disk and re-insert it and it would see the disc.

So yesterday I phoned up the customer care line told them all my issues, even though they are minor ones. My main reason being if my drive failed in the future i would have already told them about the error. So after going through telling them my serial number etc... they said they are sending me a brand new PS3 on thursday.

I know this is probably a tanks for the info moment but i was quite shocked.

Was it inside warranty (1yr)? If so i'm not surprised tbh, Sony are fantastic with warranty replacements. They used to also replace units outside of warranty but sadly their current financial status seems to have forced them to revoke that policy.

Think i might have to bite the bullet and buy a new one .
since i have been playing killzone 2 the fan rockets up to a really loud level :( out of the years warranty so if sony dont replace it what would anyone suggest ?

IIRC someone removed their heatsink, cleaned it with isotropic alcohol and then put high quality thermal paste back on. This would improve the heat transfer from the components and thus keep the fans at a lower level.

Worst case scenario, you break it, if you're gonna buy a new one anyway then no big deal eh? :p

I will ring sony a 9am see what they say , if they wont replace it :( i will pop it open myself and swap the thermal paste then .
I think it might take a while longer to get in a ps3 than a 360 but if anyone has a guide to taking them apart i would be more than greatful ?
How many posts do i need for members market ?

Hmm did he ask me when i bought it, i said i didn't know but my first game save was on the 28th April so I assume it just under a year old. Guess I rang just in time I had been putting up with the problem since Christmas.

On a side note i need to back up all my info on there, I tried last night but gave up. Do i have to copy each file individually, or can i do it all in one go?

Grr after spending hours downloading all the updates my replacement sounds like i have a bloody gas turbine in the corner of my room. So i get another one and have to update everything again.

Is there anywhere online i can download all the updates/games whilst i am at work?
