Just a quick question for those more knowledgable than me.

I was looking at getting a PS3, but I really want to be able to play the old PS2 and PS1 games as well. As far as I understand, this was possible on the 60GB model but not on the 40GB model?

If so, what are my options? It's pretty tough to track down a new PS3 60GB now, so is there a way to get emulation working on the 40GB one?

Thanks in advance.

The cause of this change is the removal of the 'emotion engine' chip from the 40gig model - this is what was needed to run PS2 games. It is still possible for the console to software emulate PS1 games but i am unsure whether software emulation for PS2 games will be implemented in the future or whether it's even possible.

There is light on the horizon however, rumors of an 80gig model being released around summer time are getting more and more common, this is believed to have the emotion engine fitted.

There is also a newer, smaller slimline ps2 coming out soonish which will be relatively cheap new (£50?) which is another possible purchase to remove the clunky ps2 from the tv stand if you really can't wait for the 80gig model (if it ever surfaces)

Ultimate backwards compatability PS3 :)

Ha ha, thats brilliant, I'd pay £300 for one of those!

So the PS3 will still emulate PS1 games, just not PS2?

Yes.

Although, my personal thinking is, at some point this year a 80gb/120gb/160gb model (only one depending which HDD they can get cheap) will launch and that will have SOFTWARE emulation of PS2 software. I have no doubt in my mind they will not be putting the old ps2 hardware back in, after they have taken it out for the 40gb edition. Presumably at that point the 40gb owners can download this software to their machines and get ps2 backwards compatibility as well.

I can't recall the website, but there was a SONY advert looking for coders/developers to implement some sort of BC software (the advert was vague but sounded like a job opening for someone to write a ps2 emulator).

That's good stuff, most of the games I want to be able to play on it are from the PS1 era. I was thinking along the lines of Gran Turismo 2, FF7, and the like.

My next question was about them implementing it later on, so you've cleared that up! :)

Er... what about pricing for the new models? Are we likely to see the 80/120/160GB models have the inflated price of the 60GB model? I'm fairly sure 40GB would be more than enough for my needs - hell i'm only using about 5GB of my XBOX360 HDD.

To be honest the HDD size is the last of the hardware issues i would worry about when it came to the PS3, you can easily replace the HDD with pretty much any sata laptop HDD without invalidating the warranty of the console itself.

I reckon come summer or pre xmas the 40gb will drop in price and the newer model will take over it's price (£299 in UK). The HDD will become an issue. A lot of people forget you can store a lot more on the HDD of the ps3 then you can on the 360. The 360 can only store Live content & ripped CDs (I think).

The PS3 you can copy Videos etc to the HDD (if streaming isn't your thing), pictures, as well as PSN content (also I notice PSN games are much larger than XBLA games, but they won't fill up your drive to be fair).

I think my drive is currently 27gb/55gb full.

In the future you will be able to record TV shows to the HDD (in UK). So all signs, to me are this year 40gb would not be enough, so a bigger model will come. But for you or I, it would be easier to upgrade the HDD ourselves tbh.

Currently I think there is approximately 40-50 PS1 games that can be bought on PSN store for about 4 quid each (granted you could only get them all if you had EU/USA/JAP accounts). They alone would come close to filling up your 40GB drive.

Yeah but that's the thing. I would be more than happy - in fact it would be overkill - to get the 40GB model. But what I do want is emulation, or at the very least a good chance that the emulation will be added at a later date.

From what i've read here, it looks like my choice is to either get the 40GB and take my chances that emulation will get added later, or spend more on a model with emulation that has a bigger HDD which I will most likely never use.

In all honesty, I still think there's no winning the PS2 slimline option, Even when I've got my PS3, I will be keeping the PS2 along side it. I find a 3rd console a lot less annoying than shoddy emulation. (Which it is for a large part)

What I would like though is some sort of compatibility between the PS3 pad and the Slimline PS2, So we don't have to keep 2 controllers. :)

ive heard of that, but not seen a pic of the new ps2?? whats does it look like?? care to post a piccie (i cant find one):)

I think its pretty much exactly the same as the old slimline but they've built the PSU into the console as opposed to having it seperate (the psu used to be nearly as big as the console itself).
