My mate has just confirmed that it scales blu-rays via hdmi to 720p, can someone confirm if it scales them to 720p via component as well pretty pleeeeeease.

I think this is one of rp2000's bugbears at the moment I seem to recall - but I could be wrong.

Nok - I bought PoH last weekend and I agree its not a particularly good transfer at all, admittedly the type of film doesnt help but it should have been transferred better - especially now hearing about how POTC has turned out (albeit a Disney film)

if anyone is having trouble getting the update to run (getting an error at 2%). Try closing your web browser on your pc... dont understand the reason it works tbh.. but it does :p

Well I've just been having a play with it.... .NOOOO! The PS3 after an update I mean!

Found a few more options that I hadn't seen listed earlier, and of course, the ones that were.

Under GAME SETTINGS is now two options

PS/PS2 Upscaler: Off/Normal/Fullscreen
PS/PS2 Smoothing: Off/On

I assume the upscaler means normal=720p and fullscreen=1080p?
I also assume that smoothing is Anti-Aliasing? :)

Next in the BD/DVD settings, new options are

DVD Upscaler: Off/Double Scale/Normal/Full Screen

BD/DVD Video Output Format (HDMI) Auto/RGB/Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr
(maybe that one was there before, but I didn't notice?)

BD 1080p 24Hz Output (HDMI) Automatic/Off
Sets the playback method for BDs recorded at 24Hz (Frames/second)

BD/DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI): Bitstream/Linear PCM

BD Audio Output Format (Optical Digital): Bitstream/Linear PCM

MUSIC SETTINGS:

Bitmapping (Super Audio CD): Off/Type 1

PRINTER SETTINGS:

Printer Manager: The printer has not been selected ;)
Printer Selection: Select Printer to Use. Connect printer to PS3.

DISPLAY SETTINGS:

RGB Full Range (HDMI): Limited/Full

Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Super-White (HDMI): Off/On

(I've turned RGB full range and Super-White on - see if I can notice a difference later)

REMOTE PLAY SETTINGS:

Register Device: (I can't, haven't got a PSP)

Registered Device List: (not for me)

Custom Connection Settings: Remote play settings will be changed manually. If the settings are changed, the network settings for amm PSP systems that connect to this PS3 system for remote play will need to be changed. Are you sure you want to change these settings.

Above Music/photo/video in the XMB is now the option to "Search for Media Servers" I'll have to look into setting that up later

SETTINGS AND CONNECTION STATUS LIST:
Media Server Connection: Enable/Disable

OK, I think that's it, after a quick flick through.
Sorry if I've repeated a few options that were there before (such as the bitstream/pcm, which I should imagine was there before) I just entered options that looked new to me.... and therefore obviously a few that I may didn't notice before.

Have fun everybody. I've already had a quick play with a DVD, and my display remained set to 1080p :) Bluray worked fine with super-white and full RGB. Now I'll have to see if I can find my one and only SACD, and see if it plays ;)

V1N.

Downloading now :)

Musat say these updates are being releasedf quite fast and add some wonderful features, making my PS3 purchase seem better and better all the time!

Normal appears to keep the aspect ratio (giving big borders on an HDTV) whilst Full Screen stretches to fill the screen. Smoothing, as you might expect, rounds off the edges which is good although some text can look less sharp.

I've tried Dragon Quest and FFXII and they look good. The upscaling doesn't appear to be as good as the upscaling on the Xbox games on the 360 though.

Is it possible to stream pictures, MP3's and MPG's from a home network off other computers?

Seems that way with the 'search for media servers'. iirc the DLNA3 which is now supported by the PS3, is also supported by TVersity so you can use that to stream the media across WOOHOO

has anybody noticed 1080p/24 is now available?:D

I did and though ooooooo between that and the 720p thing, nobody can really complain about the Blu-Ray playback now (though some will find a way lol)

24fps. untill now the ps3 (and virtually all current bd players afaik) couldnt output 24fps 1080p, meaning that any bluray's encoded at 24fps would be played at 25fps. But since they played at the same speed, it meant the player was inserting an extra frame at the end, resulting in juddering. it's something many peopel said would never appear on the ps3, so thumbs up to sony

How do you configure your PC to share videos to the PS3 then? I've got shared folders on my XP computer but the PS3 isn't picking them up. Does it use SMB networking or something else?

Use something like http://www.tversity.com/home

IIRC that should comly with DLNA3 and should work with the PS3, but i haven't tested it yet, i will tonight though

TVersity supports

UPnP / DLNA Devices - Devices supporting the UPnP AV / DLNA standard (which is the de-facto standard for connecitivity between devices in the digital home). This includes devices like networked TVs, DVDs, Stereo Receivers, Digital Media Adapters/Receivers, Mobile Phones, Satellite and Cable set-top-boxes and more.

So should be good to go :) also IIRC you can stream xvid and divx too
