PS3 & Game Installs = HDD Too Small

320GB USB connected to mine, tempted to also drop a 160GB internal but haven't a clue of how to transfer all the files on the current 60GB drive and swap them to the new :/

There is a backup and restore facility on the PS3, it copies it to your EXT HDD, then insert new HDD PS3 auto detects new drive. It then formats in a few minutes then restore back from old HDD.

I also have a external 120Gb drive but the PS3 doesnt seem to be able to read stuff from it. Is it possible that the PS3 doesnt supply enough power to power a 2.5" HDD?

Make sure it's formatted as FAT32 and not NTFS...

Does the PS3 see external USB connected hard drives as contiguous space?
I have an existing 500GB external drive that I could happily connect up, and I did wonder if this would be the easiest place to store video files produced by the PlayTV when I get one.
Thoughts?

Excuse me jumping in but...

Will the PS3 take 7,200RPM 2.5" drives? And are there any benefits if they do? (Like faster speeds).

Also what is considered the best make and model of drive to put in the PS3?

If I have say 7gb of DLC (paid for songs off singstore) can I move them to any hardrive internal/external as long as they are played on my ps3?

I already answerd this once but my post seems to have gone... (just saying in case it pops back up and you all think I'm insane)

Most popular drive seems to be the WD scorpio, the 7200 will go in but they get a bit very hot so people tend to avoid them.

I would use a 5400rpm drive, the 7200 seems to give not much of a benefit and can cause overheating issues. In the PS3 sticky theres a link to the one i and several others use, its 160Gb plenty big enough (although i may get a bigger one cause you can lol).

They will but the results of what happens are inconclusive...

Ok im not 100% sure on this, but if it doesnt copy it across on the backup/restore then i would think the singstore would allow you the download the song 5 times as PSN stuff does.

From what I know, you're told to only use 5k RPM drives. Supposedly the firmware in the PS3 cannot deal with faster drives and you may actually notice a slowdown?

I've also heard reports that the PS3 cannot dissipate the heat made by a 7K RPM drive, but I don't believe that for a second... the heat difference between a 7K RPM drive and a 5K RPM drive isn't that large.

I doubt makes and models would make a difference, but I'm pretty sure the PS3 uses Seagate HDDs.

Just stick to the 5K RPM drives.

the stuff about 7200rpm drives and the ps3 overheating, slowing down ect, its all rubbish.

there's a thread on the sony forums that details the differences between the drives, including the speed increases and the temperature increase of a whole...get this... 2c. 2c ffs, thats less the increase of moving your ps3 to somewhere on the equator and you dont see people from those regions moaing about over heating.

i use a 3.5" seagate 250gb drive as my internal with the use of a little sata adaptor and i can tell you right now loading times are faster. its not a massive difference but its still 10% or more depending on what its doing. plus it means i pay less for my hard drive upgrade than you would for your 2.5" drives.

on the subject of space used, ive used about 58gb and it's all games and demos. no music or video. its certainly easy to make use of the space!

Is this storage issue becoming a more common experience for you guys and for those of you that have already replaced your HDD can you arrange your files of music/videos in any better way on a seperate drive as Sonys folder options on the internal are rather imited.

well, yes and no. with an external drive you can at least press triangle and view the drive by file structure instead which obviously allows you to arrange data any way you like. other than that though, no not really. no thumbnails ect and its still slow navigating a folder with a lot of entries.

one of these:

basically, it gives you an external sata port and the freedom to use whatever sata drive you like:)

i thought you might:p its no different to having an external drive plugged in, really. and that drive enclosure (the nexstar3) could have been MADE for the ps3 its such a good much. i must admit though, these days i just have it sitting behind. not because its ugly, far from it lol, it just looks cleaner. im going through a no clutter phase you see:p
