PS3 hardware "slow and broken".

Wow, I'm suprised at the majority of sensible posts on this. Elsewhere on the net it's gone mad. The article is utter rubbish though, Charlie has misunderstood some basic facts regarding the architecture and extrapolated from there. I'm not going to stand here and argue the machine is perfect, but it really gets my goat when people in positions of responsibility (i.e the 'journalist') starts banding about mis-information as fact. The guy hasn't got a clue.

I think this sums up that you can make a convincing argument for anything, good/bad regardless of the truth by simply skirting around facts, and highlighting others, exaggerations and asumptions can then be made and there you have it, a reasonably convincing (to some) argument. Judgement on the PS3 has to be reserved until I can get my hands on one, but I will not be buying one for some time, my x360 does me just fine, and I really want a Wii!

Absolutely :) I will be glad when it's released so we can finally see what the truth is - which I am quite sure is that its performance will be virtually identical to the 360's. Then it'll just be down to the skill of the developers and the quality of games which are released.

I agree, very good words there :)

This is getting silly ssssooooooooo many BAD storys, reports, made up tosh etc about the PS3 and how bad things are going for it

I dont belive a lot of it but if just one of the horror storys on the net are ture then i wont be getting one not for the stupid money they are asking

Toshiba eh? do they not have a vested interest in the HD-DVD format?

I bet they would be gutted if Sony's flagship product sunk.

I hadnt thought of that, you have a point .......but think about it seriously for a second

Think of the bad blood it would create if Toshiba purposefully nobbled their design of the CPU ( and thats also supposing that IBM and Sony didnt see the "flaw") it just wouldnt be worth the risk on Toshiba's part

Also think aobut how long Cell has been designed for - Toshiba didnt even know what side fo the hd-dvd / blu-ray fence they were on at the time they were designing it - let alone the fact it looks like there will be combo players / recorders which would make this point moot anyway.

Also remember that Tosh and IBM are also meant to be using Cell in their products, (admittedly not sure if any have been announced) but its such a deeply joint venture (from the outside at least) I cant see Tosh doing anything other than doing as good a job as possible

I may be completely wrong though

tbh i jst want the ps3 out now, so we know wether its good or bad, i dont want to buy one, just this constant bombardment is even grating on me, and ive slagged it off abit

Agreed, altho I would love to see what the Japanese forums are having to say about the PS3. There is one market that is going to sell out regardless of how good the machine is. One wonders if there is the scepticism that exists in the Euro forums?

I occasionally peruse the PS3 forums (just as an observer) and I have to say if the unwavering bias I see there is indicative of Sony fans in general the 360 really has it's work cut out.

Like most of us on here I feel the market place really needs 2 or 3 players to keep ideas fresh and costs down. What frustrates me is atm, is when asked most 360 fans / owners say they'll probably buy a Wii or PS3 as well at some point, where-as I get the feeling there are a lot of PS fans who are happy to keep their blinkers on and will get just a PS3.

Heh, I mean I know it's the PS3 forums so you'd expect a certain amount of bias but it would appear that the Sony PR machine has succeeded in instilling the belief that 'next gen' only starts when they say so.

It'll change. There were tons of PS2 owners who said they'd never buy a Microsoft console, yet a lot of them bought an Xbox and probably now own a 360. If they consider themselves to be proper gamers, they should never cut one console out completely as they'll be denying themselves some fantastic console-specific games.

If the PS3 is a dog this could also be a nail in the coffin for Blu Ray, I would rather see one dominant standard for High Def media.

I was set on buying a PS3 until I heard the price and bought a 360 almost right away. I have always had playstations since the release of PS1 and have never regretted chosing one over any competitor.

The thing is, many of the 'true PS fans' seem to think of themselves as true gamers and loyal to 'their company' and these stories arise either when an overexcited fan that worships the console-to-be sees that in reality it is not Godlike, or when rivalling console fans of extreme critics just decide to stir things up.

Of course, this story is total nonsense and no different from the stories of 360's blowing up after playing games for too long, burning down people's houses and the upgraded processor update which means the old ones won'e be able to play newer games... it's all rubbish.

Okay, I just found a few interesting posts on Slashdot and basically the 'local memory' talked about in the slide is the GPU mem. So what it is saying, is reading from GPU mem from the CPU is slow. However, the other way around is fine, so basically:

*Appalling journalism*

Story is a load of rubbish. I guess I should have guessed really.

Well all this bad press could some how work in Sony's favour (if the PS3 turns out to be amazing that is). Any press is good press, the only reason that Nintendo suddenly got all that attention was down to its stupid name.

All machine have their inherent problems, I believe it could very well be true but something that a decent programmer can work around, might just mean longer development times for games to get them optomised. I wonder if we will see delays in multi-format games coming to PS3 seeing as 360 will be well established and any programming kinks should be ironed out, from what I have been hearing 360 is going to lead development platform for most multi-format releases.

I just don't believe that article.

Read my post a few replies up. It is not vital at all. It won't make the slightest difference. The article seems 100% correct, but is just highly misleading.

*The GPU does not need to read from CPU mem!*

They need to cut blu-ray out, although it would be a very nice feature, most people would rather have a cheaper version with a standard DVD player. Due to todays DVD's players even a cheap one say £30 can be fairly decent and it would also drop the price quite significantly. I want to know how much the games are going to be as well, as at the moment the disks are not cheap to make.

They won't do that Blu Ray is Sony's baby, there are relying on the PS3 to put a Blu Ray player under lots of consumers TV's
