PS3 HDD replacement - u done yours?

ahhh thank you...... ill read that as well.....

y is everyone slating the ps3 when it seems to be bloody good value? Heck its even good value if u never play a game on it!!

Because all I want to do is play games on it, and the majority of people who buy one will want to do the same, hence why the cheapest version with the least features is selling very well.

The PS3 is pretty poor for games at the minute, but people realise now that its a very good media console and the best blu-ray player you can buy for the price and performance.

Given that I have now discovered I can use Tversity to stream media to the ps3 do you think the ps3 will need a HDD upgrade at all?

Orignially I was gonna copy my media to a 250gn laptop drive I would have replaced the 40gb one with.

I dont anticipate getting many games, only R:FOM & Drakes Fortune (maybe burnout) when I buy one and wont buy any games until GTA5/MGS4. So is 40gb enough?

The PS3 doesnt lack games anymore anyway, yea it seriously use to, but its defiantly picked up a hell of a lot and there is quite a bit avalible now! The people that say it lacks games are usually the people that dont own them.

More than enough. I don't even have 40gb of my 60gb full yet, and I have a lot of movie trailers and PSN games from the store on there. I have some xvid movies and some heroes episodes too and some music and I think I have used 30gbish. For me the streaming is not as useful as I don;t want to have 2 devices left on (pc and ps3) so upgrading the HDD is my only option.

Just a heads up for anyone contemplating it I fitted Seagate 7200RPM drive in my 40GB PS3 and it seemed to cause a few occasional lockups, most probably down to the drive getting too hot or perhaps even power-draw related?

I might try it in my original US 60GB some time see if it does the same in that...

So my advice is stick with a 5400RPM drive.

I heard there were problems using 7200rpm drives.

I dont own a PS3 yet, but will be getting one in a few weeks.

Just wanted to know has anyone upgraded there HDD in there 40gb PS3 model?

Out of interest is it needed to get a bigger HDD? is 40GB not enough?

Would it take a 250GB 2.5" 8mb catch 5400rpm like this one:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-052-SA

is 250GB overkill? Would 120GB be more sensible?

i`d go for a drive that spins at 7200rpm if it would be ok in a ps3
i went from 5400rpm drives to 7200rpm drives in my laptop and it was a very worth while upgrade

uhmmm *raises hand*

i have a question

what is to stop someone downloading tons of PSN games onto their HDD. remove said HDD and send to m8s. So they can play their games? Just need to signin using their id?

e.g. FOR SALE HDD with 20+ PS3 games preloaded 50+ movies and videos 10+ wallpapers etc

or something like this?

Like I said above I fitted a Seagate 7200.2 in my 40GB model and it caused quite a few lockups most notably during gameplay (Uncharted/Burnout) and once or twice in XMB.

I'm not sure if the 60GB models are more tolerant to 7200RPM drives though, they have a beefier power supply and more active cooling so could be.

the difference in power usage is minimal between the drives. you're the only person i know to have reported problems with a 7200rpm drive, so id be more inclined to say its maybe a problem with the cooling on your ps3 in general, or problem with the drive maybe. i wouldnt put everybody off a 7200rpm drive when your probably the only person to have those problems:)

nope, there is no mention of 7200rpm drives in the warranty info. sony have no problems with us changing the drives. im using a 3.5" drive as my internal drive. it might not be inside the ps3, but its the OS drive:)

UPDATE: Warranty: I spoke with Sony support about this and the representative told me the whole point of the PS3 having an upgradeable HDD is so that users can use bigger and better Hard drives. She told me without any hesitations that this does not break Warranty.
