ps3 is dead - anybody else had any probs with their's

the joys of importing hardware that has no warrenty protection over here. You take your gamble - sometimes it pays off sometimes it don't.

This is why I am always saying don't import hardware (when such threads come up). Very small chance of things going pete tong, but when it does you feel really upset and annoyed (or I would anyway).

I guess original poster can contact Sony but I would not expect much, they are not obliged to help you in anyway, but you never know, I have heard people with the gift of the gab get away with bolder things then getting non warrantied equipment repaired, so never say never :)

well rang sony and they didnt want to know so had a bit of a rant. then contacted the company in HK and i got to send it to him and he will get it either repaired or replace it with a brand new one. think it may be time then to sell it on the auction site and go uk model. only reason i got from hk was cos they phased out the 60gig consoles otherwise i would have got one from over here. oh well you live and learn i suppose

Is there anyway you could get the bloke to give you a refund after he gets it back from repair? It may be easier in the long run, and if you sell to someone else then you get the hassle of getting sorted for them, if it goes wrong.

What exactly did Sony say to you? I'm curious. Did you tell them you bought it from HK or as has been mentioned, did they know when you gave them the serial number?

The Wii doesn't seem to do too badly.
I think I've seen a total of 1 dead Wii thread on here :p.

Thats because its a repackaged gamecube :p

Other than yourself Nokkon, I don't know of anyone with a broken 60GB PS3, these recent 40GB's though there have been a handful of failed BD Drives on here, but lets not go blowing all out of proportion.

A couple of people here have had 60gb's die. Didn't rp2000 have his replaced?
I know there were a few, but very few. There's been a lot more 40gb ones die in a lot less time on here though.

You would have head about it from me if mine broke LOUDLY, trust me ;) And I would bang on about the reliability a lot less (even though my own one breaking has no bearing on the overall reliability, it would leave a sour taste in my mouth :D )

sorry for not keeping the thread up to date but here was the outcome the guy i boght it from wanted me to send it to him so sony would repair it - meaning i would need to pay close to £120 in postage charges. so i did a bit of browsing an found a few companies willing to fix it for £100. so i thought is slightly cheaper will go for that. then a bit more browsing an i found replacement blu ray lens for sale for £30. so i thought what the hell it aint working so i may as well try and repair it myself.
lens arrived today - i strated the transplant process and 30 mins later it was complete and ps3 worked straight away. i was well chuffed. it was a bit daunting but it all worked out ok in the end.

im beginning to think SONY will never leave their laser problems behind them. i just dont know what keeps killing them, but this has been a problem with anythign with a sony name on the front. the ps2 suffered awfully with it, so did the ps1. stand alone sony cd players suffered with it, their midi systems did (i had two, both working apart from the laser - both failed).

I have no idea why they just keep having problems:(

Jonshaw im glad you had the balls to do it yourself. you saved a lot of money there:D

Dont get me wrong I know its a huge problem historically (not really so bad this gen so far) but I have never had a laser problem at all - ps3, numerous ps2's cd players, dvd etc etc

maybe cheaper lasers are used when consoles pricies drop . I still have uk launch day ps1,ps2,psp and ps3 that all function perfectly and have been used constantly ;)

I had a problem with mine also, Bluray problem. The only saving grace being in the Sony camp is that I had a brand new unit delivered to my door 15 hours later.
