PS3 or XB360 ...

OP - I would say you need to weigh up the following:-

1, Do you want to play games online?
2, Do you want to connect via Wireless?
3, Do you intend to download games/trailers/demos etc?
4, Do you intend on watching Hi-def movies on it?

Well I know you answered yes to #4 already, but the others are important as they will effect the price comparison of both systems. You can do all of the above out of the box on PS3 but if you want to do all of the above with a 360 then you will need to buy a premium system as it has a hard drive, you will also need a HD-DVD add on, a wireless adapter and a subscription to Xbox live. Add up the cost of all of these and then compare against the cost of a PS3 plus a HD cable (HDMI, component etc).

Just going off OcUK prices:-

Xbox 360 Premium Games Console = £234.99 / Xbox 360 HD-DVD Player = £140.99 / Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter = £52.86 / Xbox Live 12 month subscription = £40 (approx)

TOTAL = £468.84

PS3 = £425 / HDMI cable = £25

TOTAL = £450

You can get cheaper deals than these on either system if you shop around and yes, before anyone says, I know that with the 360 you have the 'choice' of wether you want the extras or not, but he already said he wanted to play HD movies so I am assuming he wants to game online via a wireless connection.

Is there any plans to release a XB360 with the HD-DVD as standard?

Are the PS3 better now with a few software upgrades? I remember people saying that they were less than good when they first arrived.

Any opinions welcome.

Thanks.

With regards to BR vs. HD-DVD, i'd suggest do the sensible thing and wait for there to be a definitive winner in the format war before commiting. We'll know in about 6 months and by then dedicated blu-ray or HD-Dvd players will be a lot cheaper but the choice is ultimately yours. I think you should buy a console primarily for what you intend to do with it. If you want Hi-def now over gaming then the ps3 is probably what your looking for.

the recent 1.8 firmware update for the ps3 has swayed me into sony's camp, i have a huge collection of ps2 games and older dvd's so the ability to keep them all and allow the ps3 to run them with a higher output is important to me.

gran turismo 4 looks awesome with the new update but that said i have no iea how they got it looking as good as they did on the underpowered ps2.

And how exactly is that not commenting on the topic? :confused:
What im saying is why would watching movies effect the 360 reliability any more than playing games? Im sure if i can play oblivion for 6 or 7 hours I can watch a 2 hour movie.

if it's not an important reason then MS would have kept the old xbox design. use your head mate.

Thats utter rubbish, console designers rarely (if ever) keep the same design because customers like to see something new. It further reinforces the fact that its a new product that is worth getting even if you have the old one. I wasn't saying that looks aren't a factor when buying a console, I was saying its damn stupid as a MAIN reason to spend £400 on a console.

Do you know exactly why the x360 has reliability issue? most are GUESSING it's the heat issue which cause the board to warp. So the longer the operation time, the higher the chance of failure. Having said that, I'm not convinced it's purely heat issue because I simply don't know apart from reading comments on the net and word of mouth. So I think it's best to keep the operation hours to the minimum.

You are utter rubbish and nailed yourself big time. I said "Beside, the PS3 looks more posh...." so what made you think I gave it as a main reason? Additionally, the OP said he wants to use the console to watch HD-DVD or BlueRay. So the xbox 360 + HD drive isn't that far from £400. Don't tell me you didn't see his comment "the whole BR vs HD-DVD is important".

I'd say if its for movies too get the PS3.

Well the 360 has a HDDVD player and a Blue Ray player is out soon so that would be the logical choice for movies as you are not stuck on a specific format.

Good info, thats kinda what I was thinking, to get what I want the price diff is not that much.

But the reliability factor is very important, so its looking like PS3 now...

I can wait for games, there will be just as many good games on it as the XB360, the XB has been out longer...

Get a 360 and an upscaling dvd player (£30) for your HDTV. I'd see how the format war pans out before siding one way or the other.

The 360's gaming line-up simply blows the PS3's out of the water.

get a 360 purley for gaming, if your big into you movies and pitcure quality, you will want a stand alone player anyway. Console players have never been that great for quality compared to stand alone drives.

But yeah, they are noisy, use mine for gaming only though, so the volume is normally right up or the headphones are on.

Stand-alone Blu-ray players are more expensive than a PS3..

At the moment the PS3 is a steal if you want a hi-def movie player.

I have both the 360 and PS3 and my opinion is get the PS3.. I appreciate the 360 has better online and a better 'current' catalogue behind it, but when you compare package to package, the PS3 wins.. hands down..

The 360 has a shoddy build quality and reliability is all messed up. Then there's the noise. it pees me off everytime i fire up the thing.

If you live on a bypass or deaf then maybe you won't notice it, for normal humans however it's way past acceptable.

i see no reason to not get a ps3, quality titles are on the up and build quality is par with perfection.

I cant see how blu-ray makes it very good for games...yes it has additional space but if games moved to blu-ray discs you would see a proportionate increase in the cost of ps3 games as blu-ray discs are expensive.

You do realise EVERY ps3 game is on a Bluray disc.

Seems to me that HD-DVD is failing and so MS quickly jump on the Blu-Ray bandwagon.

Actually whilst the technology for creating BD is initially more expensive, once it gets into full flow the cost per disc will be cheaper than CD/DVD or HD-DVD. I can't remember where I read this though, but I know it was one of the strong selling points of BD to the industry as it would give more profit per disc.

If I can find the source I will repost it here.

That is a good comparison but you could get xbox 360 premium with 4 game + xbox360 hd-dvd player + 12 month live + wireless adaptor = 499.96 delivered if you want to get gaming straight away and watching movies .

xbox 360 premium + xbox 360 hd-dvd + 12 month live = 424.97 delivered if you wanted to choose your games and didnt need the wireless adaptor .

playstation 3 + hdmi cable = 399.99 delivered and then you buy the games you want .

playstation 3 + hdmi cable + 3 games = 499.99 delivered gets you gaming straight away .

HD-DVD will be the winner. Plans are afoot to start shipping sub $150 HD-DVD players in the US. This will make the format more affordable to the general masses. Walmart have placed an order for 2000000 units. Whats the bets that they sell out overnight

Get a PS3 as they are much better. The blu ray format will win and take over the entire world haha! Also to all these people who talk about the PS3 having less games.....this is inevitable as it has been out for a much shorter period of time than the Xbox 360.

I have had to make this same decision not too long ago and decided to go for a PS3, if anything the poor build quality of the Xbox 360 is enough to put me off. I really think that the PS3 is a much more powerful console and is certainly more future proof than the 360. Give the games some time to be released, although there are still some great ones available at the moment.

That was debunked by both Walmart and the company it alledged was building them.it was $300anyway. The only place in the world where there is a HD wars is the US,but BR on average outsells HD-DVD 2-1, in europe approx 75% HD sales are blue ray and some 93% in Japan. Theres also been reports that Universal may decide to do dual format now, but has never been confirmed so cant take it as true. I cant see how BR will fail it has the biggest exclusive support from the movie studios, and that includes the Big ones such Disney/pixar, Sony, Fox etc, the Star Wars Films will also only be on Blue Ray (according to news reports).

Why does it matter at this point to commit to either of the formats, if you want hi-def movies now then the ps3 is the way to go, personally im going to w8 until one format is a clear winner and the players drop to around £350 because atm prices are extortionate for a standalone player.
