PS3 question - blu-ray over component

Mulling over getting a PS3 at some point, but my TV doesn't have HDMI. It does have VGA, but the PS3 doesn't.

Has anyone here got experience of blu-ray video over component? And games, come to that? If someone has experience of both HDMI and component I'd be interested to hear how they compare.

I don't think you can do 1080p over component.

Of course, if your TV doesn't support it, then who cares anyway! :)

I can't recall if you can even get above 576p with component on a Blu-ray film because you're not using HDCP protection.

It's been a long time since I looked into this stuff too, but I'm sure in the run up to my buying my PS3, I remember reading about the HDCP problem, reading that it won't be a problem yet, as they won't be implementing it on disks for some years, allowing non-HDMI displays to play the films above 576p.

Although I'm sure I remember reading that, it may be worth doing a google or something before making a purchase.

Most games aren't made in 1080 anyways, all the ones i've seen are 720p.

As for the Blu Ray I don't know.

I am fairly certain that Bluray was stuck at 576P or 480P via Component and was then changed in an update to go upto 1080i on component (even if your tv supports 1080p over component).

Can't find anything definitive on the net, at a brief glance.

Just out of interest, I had a quick google myself.

From what I read, seems it doesn't downscale to 720p at all, as I thought it did, it does indeed do 1080i, or right down to 480p on bluray.

So with component you can game at 720p/1080i, and watch bluray at 1080i.

I am fairly certain this was prior to the firmware update that adding all the upscaling/downscaling goodness.

Yes, that's right. After the firmware update component will do all resolutions except 1080p. HDMI is the only way to get 1080p.

It is pretty sad tbh that they don't throw in a Component lead like you get with the 360, especially for the price your paying.

When I got my PS3, I had one of the first bundles that included an HDMI cable.

I was pretty sad that the original Sony box didn't include an HDMI cable.
Thing is, where do you stop?

If they'd included a component cable, that would've been useless to me, and stayed in the box.

Should they also include a VGA cable?
Should they also include an RGB cable?

On the one hand, if they include every connection type in the box, it would raise the cost some.

On the other hand, hell, this is Sony ;) How much would it cost them to include an RGB/component/VGA adaptor, as well as an HDMI cable? ;)

You see what I mean though, they include the basic cable that works for everyone, and then it's up to the individual to get whichever cable is required for their particular setup, rather than throw everything in, most of which would never get used.

I know what your saying mate, but if they had included the Component cable for the people with HDTV's and a Component > SCART adaptor for the SDTV people, they would have had all bases covered.

and actually, as I said above, this IS Sony.
I'm sure it wouldn't have hurt them too much to include a few cables, especially HDMI as standard, seeing as this is what's required to run the console at it's full potential, at 1080p with fullRGB etc.

Still, I guess it must make some difference.
Look at the price cut for removing 2 usb ports, and a memory card adaptor.
I'm sure the difference in price between a 60gb and 40gb HDD can't be making much difference.

It all adds up I guess... but yeah, if I'd paid the £400 for my PS3, and when I came to open it, didn't have the HDMI cable to connect to my TV, and I had to use composite, I'd have been pretty damn gutted.
