PS3 - Shocking failure rate.

I was watching a DVD on my PS3 last night just to compare the noise difference and after about 10 mins of playback my PS3 fans were actually louder than my 360.

Isn't that a sign of a fault? Should I take it back?

Definately, unless your you're talking BS to give the PS3 a bad name!

Ah right well I'll try take it back to HMV later then, thank **** I have a Memory Stick to copy my saved games to, pen drive doesn't get detected!

Nope. :(

It was quite a bit louder than my 360, I was shocked too. :o

You can hear the PS3 fans after a while although it's more the sound of air being pushed rather than a grating fan noise like you have on some 360 consoles. The 360 consoles vary wildly in terms of the noise they produce. My first used to sound like a model aircraft being revved where as my replacement is much quieter and doesn't whine so much. It seems like you have one of the quieter ones.

Yeah my 360 fan seems to whine a bit, still reasonably quiet.

I read about the PS3 fans that if they spin up too fast or don't spin down after exiting folding that something is wrong, oh well just happy I can keep my saved games.

Edit: Just got off the phone with HMV said I can take it to them for a straight swap. :)

My PS3 does the same thing... it's sitting in the middle of an AV Rack with other gear (open back/front, glass shelves), and after 10 mins, the fans start to get louder and louder.. not quite 360 playing a game loud of course, but loud enough to notice it isn't 'silent'..

It's not surprising, it's well documented that the PS3 kicks out a lot of heat, and if you don't have very good airflow around it, the fans will kick in to get rid of the heat build up.. I've had 3 PS3's under my TV, all behave the same, after 10 mins, the fans wind up to a noticeable level.. I think mine is a little bit louder then some, but I can't see how I could take this back and claim it's a faulyt?

Just saw this on another site talking about failing PS3's thought I'd post it

Stupid Friend.

Yes, my friends ps3 broke.

He came round mine explaining that his PS3 just died for no reason.
I asked him if he used any faulty games, dvds, or blu-ray. He said no. I asked him if he dropped it etc. No, no no.

So I went round his to have a look. He had put black duct tape over the air vents. All of them.

I said 'why have you put duct tape over the vents?'

He replys with this:

'I am really cautious about my ps3. I really look after it. I don't want dust getting inside it so I covered up the holes to stop dust from getting in.'

I was in tears.

:D

My PS3 is very well ventilated, lots of space for air to get out but it just speeds up even when idle on the XMB after 10 mins or so.

Same really, if they sort out that problem and make them all with the quieter drive (friend of mines is actually very quiet... the one that got a replacement!)
So is that the BenQ drive then?

How many have they sold worldwide (PS3) ?

1% is good, but for example, say they sold 3,000,000 units that still makes 30,000 unit failures.

I'm just glad i'm not in that 1% :D

I am betting that like 0.5% of the 1% is due to user error. Like that guy with the duct tapes :p It really is a solid piece of kit, and I have never ever had the fans go above a near-silent whisper in the middle of games. Can't say that for my other two systems, so it is quite impressive.

Look at it this way nearly as many 360 have failed as PS3 have been sold!

The failure rate is a percentage so it doesn't matter if they sold 100,000 or 10 million

It makes the rumoured 30% of the X360 look a 'bit high' :o

Yup.

Can't understand why I've been multi-quoted though :o

that chart of 360 sales, anybody notice since xmas has been stuck at 10million, seems as if the 360 has peaked

I believe this is because they do not have an exact figures, ive seen the chart number change a few times on vgchartz.
What is worrying though is if it has peaked and yet still manages to outsell the PS3 in the USA. I've also noted that in the US X360 software sales are close to or actually more than PS2 and PS3 combined, now that should be setting off the alarm bells at Sony.
