PS3 - Shocking failure rate.

Sorry to take this slightly off topic, but if everyone knows 360s have a giant failure rate, and if everyone knows why 360s fail, and everyone knows what the problem is and roughly how to fix it, does that mean there are third party modifications out there to improve cooling that actually make the console more reliable?

The intercooler apparently isn't very good, your best bet is to mod the 360 yourself when the warranty is over, e.g. adding a third fan to the front and replacing the current fans.

Also you can stick some AS5 thermal paste on the heatsinks.

These charts probably quote units shipped rather than units sold.

Microsoft flooded the market with Xbox 360s at the end of the year so that they could meet their 10 million unit target. Apparently quite a few are gathering dust in the US stores.

Since moving my PS3 from on top of the TV cabinet to inside I have noticed that the fans spin a lot faster, and are now far more noticable. On top of the cabinet I never heard them, but now I can and although it's not irritating I will be moving the console out of the cabinet because I don't want to hear the fans.

Regarding DVD playback which was mentioned earlier in the thread my 360 was as silent as the PS3 outside the cabinet, and more so inside the cabinet but the picture quality looks stunning on the PS3, which I don't remember being particularly impressed with it on the 360, that could be down to the films tho?

My daughter was watching Charlie & the chocolate factory yesterday and the quality IMO wasn't far off some of my Blu-ray films.

I don't use my PS3 over HDMI (yet new TV later this year) so I can't upscale DVD' over component, but my 360 upscales over VGA so I use it for DVD instead.

Oh yeah I took the PS3 back to HMV today, gotta go back tomorrow as they get them back in stock then, I get a whole new box/controller/PS3 and warranty.

Not bad eh! 3 months free warranty.

(This also means another copy of Casino Royale when I register on PSN!)

Used a Memory Stick to backup my saved games as my pen drive wouldn't be detected.

Pray that this PS3 doesn't have dodgy fans.

Wonder what firmware it ships with (ie how long its been about), did you just backup to your saved games or do a system backup?

I just did saved games only my Memstick is only like 64mb (It came with my phone)

Not too fussed didn't lose much just gotta download Tekken/GTHD. ^^
