Hi guys.

I have just finished building a new AV system consisting of a panny v10 50 inch and an onkyo 876 av receiver. I use a 360 for gaming.

Now - I need 2 things really. A bluray player and a "streamer" for streaming my 1080p video files though my amp. I was going to get a panny player and a WDTV streamer.

Now I have noticed that the new PS3 supports HD audio etc and the price is quite attractive. I understand that through ps3mediaserver I can stream files across my hard wired network (10/100). It seems logical to just purchase a ps3 to do all this stuff.

My question however, will a ps3 slim stream 1080p h264 / MKV files on the fly over my network without hassle? Some of the files we are talking 25gig.

Thanks!

Doing the conversion on-the-fly?

mkv2vob does work but it takes a long time if it needs to transcode, a 2 hour 1080p movie can take 2 to 3 hours on my [email protected] if I select a high quality codec/bitrate

Yep, I watched Trainspotting streaming from my P4 3.0Ghz laptop with 2GB RAM. No stuttering or anything and the quality was the same as a physical Blu Ray disc.

e8400 @ 3.0Ghz with 2 gig ram, raptor drives - should be ok I assume?

Erm... Yeah you'd think so.:D Should be just fine, PS3 Media Server could be just what you're looking for....

And, you'll also get a fairly decent blu ray player and a games console as well.. win win all round I see it for you....

I fully agree :) I just hope it is easy to set up this streaming business else I ll be annoyed ;)

It really perplexes me that so many people have issues with the PS3 wireless capabilities, I transcode and stream 1080p content to my PS3 via Wi-Fi (Standard issue BT router) and never have problems at all

You're bloody lucky then mate.... Mine has never worked, not even with those home plugs.......

I simply gave up all hope of wireless streaming, and looking to cable my living room with Cat 5 and RJ45 points....

To be fair the more I hear about people having issues the more I think the PS3 must be fussy with certain routers or firmwares or something.

I think Firmware might have an influence on wireless speed, before I could stream wireless without problems but lately it just pauses sometimes while streaming and it's not my PC as that is a [email protected] and it also happens with an already transcoded file.

In the end I just converted all the files with mkv2vob and copied them to a 160GB USB drive

My PS3 wireless is fan for games, downloading but try and stream even an 720P file it spits its dummy out, so also gave up and just plonk the films onto a usb pen and do it that way =)

Whats more annoying it should be fine! The router is if anything 20cm away from the PS3 and PS3 media server has more than enough PC power to convert on the fly (Q9300,4GB DDR2,ATi 4870)

The problem with PS3MediaServer / TVersity is that they are still transcoding the .mkv files. Quality is very poor & defeats the purpose of the mkv file.

I've got Windows 7 RC 7232 with DivX Tech Preview streaming 7-18gb 720p/1080p films.

Looks lovely, no transcoding, no codecs, no faffing about required.

360 starts straight to Media Centre and my Movies/TV Show libraries are waiting for me.

PS3 can't see the Movies library (...yet. They added videos/pictures/music libraries in a firmware IIRC) and when I go to play and 720p/1080p files and select 'original size' view, the image is the same size as an average .avi file, as though the PS3 is downsizing it for some reason. I had a quick gander in the settings but can't see anything.

The 250GB slim is released next week for £300 probably also includes a game, so if you can afford another £50 then it may be an idea to wait.
