Hey,

Just put Yellow Dog on my PS3 and although I think it's amazingly cool to have a fully functional PC sitting "inside" my games console, I'm a bit peeved at how slow the OS feels; most probably owing to the paltry 256MB of RAM.

What I'm wondering is if there any any other Linux distros which are pre-loaded with drivers for the PS3's BD drive, Wifi, Sixaxis, HD res fixes etc. etc. Whilst I do appreciate that PS3 Linux is a rather specialist area, I would have thought the fact that it is a standardised hardware base would make it a good target for a customised release.

Something like a custom built version of Xubuntu would be amazing. I'm a total Linux beginner, unwilling to try it on my PC, but would love to experiment on my PS3 - if only it was a bit faster!!

Cheers,

Suman

P.S. Failing that, could anyone point me in the right direction on how to slim down Yellow Dog so it runs more efficiently?

Im in a mean mood and point out the worlds bestist best friend is google! so use it and have a look for your self!
/end rant

Sorry long day.

Im actually really interested in this my self (future ps3 owner here, when i get some cash) and found this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_for_PlayStation_3 on the wikipedia as a good start place (after googeling "linux ps3"). It looks like quite a few distros will do this but the way the ps3 allows you to play with linux on it seems quite restrictive (for now) so really good performance might not be an option...

Haha yeah I'd hit Google and come up with the usual suspects, but nothing on PS3-specific distros.

I'm thinking Xubuntu would be a perfect candidate, after reading this rant. All someone would need to do is add-in the generic hardware driver support and a few small fixes etc. Not that I'd know where to start :p

I doubt theres much "exciting" stuff going on at the mo.... Mainly as the ps3 uses a pretty tight (but sort of cool) lockdown system to stop other os's access to the main hardware, making linux on it pretty slow :( (as well as the ram limitation but iv had a good gentoo install on a p2 with 128meg of ram so i dont really see the rants as educated in how linux works...)

Anyway (no more basing of lazyness) basically the ps3 prevents other OS's access to the gfx card bit of it making lots of tings hard :(

To be cool id give gentoo on it a bash and see what you can compile to work on it (and how fast it goes).

When i get one (looks liek september when im back at uni) im thinking of doing the same and will make a cool little thread on it

lol he'll learn....

Its like learning to swim by being thrown in the deep end and left too it, best on to do it with swimming but linux its probably the best way to get some independance with it... :)

lol ok... well is there anyway I can slim down Yellow Dog to make it run a little quicker? There's a lot of stuff in the install process I just clicked yes yes yes to :p
