PS3 Timeline by Third Party

The ps3 will outsell both consoles most likely, but microsoft have managed to secure a lot of quality games so dont expect it to be the same as last gen, where the ps2 sold about 80 million more units than the 360. The 360 has sold 10 million in a year, so next year with titles like Halo 3, Forza 2, mass effect, Fable 2 and probably the biggest game which will push the most people to next gen, our very own GTA IV.

Yes, I know that.

We are talking about at launch, to enable online play. Try re-reading what has been posted.

EDIT - I'm giving up on this thread now, as the fanboys are arriving. I've made my post, I don't need to defend it.

Have fun.
Of course you need to defend it if some of it is a load of cobblers.

Wii had to be updated at launch to access anything online. The 360 had to be updated soon after launch if you wanted to connect to Live.

Considering its around double the power of a gamecube how exactly is it a gamecube in a new case?

It's bad enough all the wii topics descend into BS about it being a gamecube/crap graphics/novelty, blah blah blah but surely we can do without it in a PS3 thread?

May 8th, 2006 - New PS3 controller will have six degrees of motion, but no rumble feature. Sony's Phil Harrison states that rumble was last gen and no longer needed.
May 31st, 2006 - Sony's Phil Harrison denies copying the Wiimote and states that the PS3 will replace the PC

Last gen rumble, aka we got our asses handed to us in a lawsuit, took a hissy fit and refused to properly license the technology.

Pc is no longer needed? Guess sony can stop flogging their litle vaio pc line then. And game devs can obviously use the ps3 to create models, textures sound effects for games etc. I heard 3ds max runs amazingly on the ps3 as well.

As for not copying the wiimote, funny that it was a long time after nintendo showed it off that sony came with their own version of it, definately not copied in any way.

Can sony possibly jam their foot into their own mouth any harder?

2009 PS3 outsells Xbox360 in USA, EU. (having already outsold the xbox360 in total units by xmas 06 in Japan)

You see this is typical so can you care to explain why this will happen?

Ive yet failed to find anyone on here that can explain why it will...

Is it the great value the PS3 provides, forget the high price its good value.
Is it the amazing game exclusives you only get on Playstation, which are how many?
Is it because of the availability/choice of titles
Is it because its TOP franchises are still not available with no concrete dates (MGS GT5) but people dont mind waiting
Is it because the wii and X360 may be cheaper ALWAYS but this doesnt matter
Is it that everyone is just dying to upgrade to Blu Ray
Is it because the online features currently suck but online still doesnt matter
Is it because the system has several bugs (720p/emulation/upscaling/online features) not yet fixed
Is it because The Next Generation Doesnt Start Untill They Say So
Is it because Sony have had past No.1 status and were so dominant they just will do it again no matter what?

Seriously those are issues that will decide its popularity...

"Is it the great value the PS3 provides, forget the high price its good value."

Correct - i dont think its bad value, nor will it be percieved as such in a year or two.

"Is it the amazing game exclusives you only get on Playstation, which are how many?"

Correct, the main franchises are still PS3 only. there are a lot of people hanging out to play them.

"Is it because of the availability/choice of titles"

Correct - everyone expects continuation from the PS2 where the availability and number of excellent games for the console prevailed.

"Is it because the wii and X360 may be cheaper ALWAYS but this doesnt matter"

Correct - Percieved Value>total cost

"Is it that everyone is just dying to upgrade to Blu Ray"

Blu-Ray sounds cool to the guy on the street. he wants it yes.

"Is it because the online features currently suck but online still doesnt matter"

this is an area sony can and will improve upon.

"Is it because the system has several bugs (720p/emulation/upscaling/online features) not yet fixed"

lol what 720P bug is this then? emulation not too dissimilar from XBOX360 atm either. never stated as an upscaler.

"Is it because Sony have had past No.1 status and were so dominant they just will do it again no matter what?"

in tandem with the above ansers which you have really provided yourself, most likely yes.

At the end of the day the console is going to be too expensive to be as succesful as its predecessors. Consoles only sell in big numbers to the masses when they're <£150 and there's stacks of games out. It will be a long time before the PS3 comes down into affordable territory for most people.

Because blu-ray sounds "cool" people are automatically going to want it

Roll up roll up £450 for something that sounds cool. Any takers? Didn't think so.

Yeh, cause HD-DVD is soo much cheaper...

If you have a 360 then yeah it is, the point being that people aren't likely to splash out almost half a grand on something that "sounds cool". And as already said dvd and hd have name recognition to average people, blu-ray hasn't, blu-ray has a massive uphill struggle on its hands to even get the average joe know what its all about, hd has been a buzz word for the last few years, and everyone knows what dvd is all about so most people can make the hd-dvd connection.

Nickg said:
not necessarily, but they sure as hell have heard of it and think it sounds cool even if they dont know what it is/does

Judging by online polls the majority of people don't care and are happy with DVD, those are obviously the ones who know what it is.

Bluray just won't be a selling point for the masses after all regular DVD's are so cheap now it will take a lot of persuading for Joe Public to spend £18 on a film.

Even if you have a 360, it's still an extra £100 on top of what you paid for the 360.

As for the uphill struggle, why would average people pay £££ to get hd-dvd when they've already got dvd? HD hasn't been anywhere near as big a buzz word for the average joe as you make it out to be. At either price, your average joe is going to wait a while until the prices aren't ridiculous, the format war may well be over by then.

both formats are p*ss poor at the moment, limited availability, few killer titles, both have crap /limited/noisy hardware..

you know what ? none of that matters..

once the PS3 is readily available you will see massive marketing from Sony pushing it & the blue ray format. I can only assume MS or whoever are ready for it with their own mass marketing campaigns.

Marketing will win this round not technical specs.
