PS3 Timeline by Third Party

And you go into any computer store and you'll see Intel Core Duo etc stuck everywhere, doesn't mean your average joe gives a ****. And yes there probably are booklets telling them how much better Core Duo is too.

DVD's first came out in 1997, but it wasn't untill 2003 that it became the dominant format, mainly because your average joe blogs couldn't afford it up till then. Six years is plenty of time for the format wars to be over by.

I've seen the odd ad for HD, but they don't explain what it is, so unless your average joe goes into a store and reads the booklets, they won't know what it is anyway (who actually does read them? :\).

Who actually reads the booklets, hmm lemme think, probably anyone thats about to drop any significant amount of money on a new lcd or plama tv? Even if they don't read the booklets hd is a selling point of the newer tv's and something the sales assistant will mention.

Joebob i think you seriuosly dont understand HOW the PS2 was so popular and why it always remained the NO.1 choice

How did Sony come to knock off Nintendo and Sega?
Its not about oh they were best they will always continue to be best.

Remember Atari?

Companes make bad decisions from time to time and the industry as a whole sees the PS3 pricepoint as a major concern. Blu Ray was not needed for gaming purposes and its a gamble Sony have taken. Sony may of been wiser with a DVD model and games on DVD to keep in line with a X360 price point and if they wanted also launched a Blu Ray capable player/entertainment console version.

Dont you see the lead the X360 has and its position is exactly the reverse of what the PS2 Xbox position was.

Microsoft have these advantages just as the PS2 had but they also have more now too...

Pricepoint with a possible 50% price difference (This is a massive price difference)

Game Selection
Classic Cheaper Game Titles
Better online Service
Accumulated the majority of BIG Licences
Have their own Franchises HALO/FORZA/FABLE

Its going to be very hard for Sony to fight against this not to mention the Wii.

You cant turn round and show me a list of games that points out to make the PS3 a better option. Any of the big Franchises like GT5 and MGS dont even have confirmed release dates. Sony doesnt as yet have a range of games that show the X360 up as an inferior system.
You cant say the online experience is better
You cant say that most gamers actually care about Blu Ray. You then cant warrent the price if mainly/only wanted for a games machine
Any gamer being a PS2 fan or not ony has to look at the confirmed X360 launch line up for 2007 and see that its going to be one of the best years for gamers in a long time.

PS3 has to win on its own merits and available games and services, not because PS2 was the console of the last generation.

This is a new generation

Casual gamers don't pay premium prices though and I would probably believe most of them know of the xbox 360 by now due to the large scale advertising MS are doing.

ditto, the large majority didn't get their PS2's ect till sub £150, won't be long till MS makes its core system just that (this 2007 i bet) - something the PS3 cannot do for years yet what with its Blue-Ray drive. Then by the time the PS3 does get to sub £150 MS will just announce its next console

I was a PS fanboi, had a PS1, PS2. Loved my PS1, PS2 did suit its purpose, but online play was poor. Only reason i bought the PS2 was for the GTA series and GT. GT4, was good, but not as good as the originals, they went for more and more and it was just samey. PS3 is doing just the same, Sony think that throwing more at a console will make it better, blu-ray etc. A gamer doesnt care for blu-ray, they want a console not a blu-ray player which does the dishes for you to. And as a games console, its poor. Online play nowadays is a must. Its nearly 2007, people want to play against others. Xbox LIve is one of the best things ive been on. Load up the console, click online and off you go. Play with a load of people and have a laugh. Xbox has loads of good current games out with more to come. I personally dont think sony are going to cut it this time. Maybe it will sell enough consoles, but it will never be what the PS1 and PS2 has been.

Have you seen how many people have purchased a Wii or X360 on these forums lately, I wonder how many of them will also feel the need or want for a £425 Blu Ray Player, sorry i mean games console.
How does having a Wii influence their HD choice?.

"The PS2 already owns the industry's all-time sales record," said Business Week. "As of last March, Sony had shipped more than 103 million units worldwide. In the year ending in March, 2007, Sony expects to sell an additional 11 million -- and just 6 million PS3s. In the following year, Sony will likely ship another 11 million PS2s vs. 7 million PS3s, according to research by rating agency Standard & Poor's (MHP)."

The point being that if someone buys a wii for games or a X360 they may feel they have less reasons or indeeed insterest to purchase a PS3.

Sony so far are more in a position to sell the PS3 as an affordable Blu Ray player than as a console, the reason to warrent its price.

They proved this themselves with a recent comment
"We are not competing against the wii or X360"

Look at sales reports for PS3 games in japan on launch day with the system and you will find its one of the worst on record for a launch system with many people not even buying a single game. Other consoles have had a 2 or 3 game average purchase with a system. Though to be fair this is to be reflected in the systems high price.

Japan is MAD for Sony products and Blu Ray over their could be a big thing, worldwide Sony havnt got the same foothold.

Lcd's and plasmas are a lot more affordable now than they were a few years ago, jan sales you'll see a lot of them being shifted and the smaller models are coming down in price some as the larger screens get even larger.

Any idea how many games PS3 will have on the UK release in MArch 07?

Not all may arrive just on release but soon after.
The best ones will be...

Motorstorm
F1 2006
Virtua Fighter 5
GT HD Demo
Resistance Fall Of Man

Other Old stuff by then...
Most of All the EA Sports titles that were available this winter.
Others lke COD 3

Might be another possible announcement in LAS VEGAS at the 40th Anniversay of CES.... 2nd Week of Janurary, will see then.

Pretty much look at the USA lineup between now and Feb/March and expect something simular with one or two others.

March 07 lineup should look like:
Out Now in US, i expect most will launch in the UK at launch window
Resistance: FOM
RR7
Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom
Call Of Duty 3
madden '07
Tiger '07
Probably at least one of the basketball games if not both
Blazing Angels
Full Auto 2
Fight Night Round 3
Genji
Marvel Ultimate Alliance
Mobile Suit Gundam
NFS Carbon
Tony hawk's Project 8

Releasing Before March In US
Sonic
Rainbow Six Vegas
F.E.A.R. (apparently, but doubt it will make Feburary)
GRAW2 (Slated for 1st march??)
Virtual Fighter 5
TES IV: Oblivion

Out In Japan Now, i expect full versions will be out on Launch in EU.
Motorstorm
F1 CE

Games i think may make launch
Lair
Heavenly Sword (With it being a UK dev, i think Sony might hammer to get this done on time)

Playstation Marketplace
GTHD
Tekken 5
Lemmings
Cash Guns Chaos
Blast Factor
Various PSOne classic games for PSP

Thats what i think the launch window should look like, if so its a very good launch line up. I would hope they don't release every game on Launch day, but launch with 10 titles then 2 a week for a month or so

Since this seems to be a Sony bashing thread its maybe worth noting that a lot of the multiplat releases above have been proven to run better on the xbox 360. I wonder how long it will be before the PS3 lives up to the hype as the more powerful of the two consoles?

Also didnt one of the basketball games get cancelled, the one from EA (I dont follow basketball games so dont know their names) ?

Because it had such a huge brand following - many people consider both the Xbox and the Dreamcast as better systems but in the end brand awareness won through.

The market was completely different back then and quite honestly it was just waiting for a company to come along and take advantage of Sega and Nintendos fixed marketing.

I know companies make bad decisions and Sony has made some blunders I admit, but I truly beleive they have such a prominent brand that they will pull it back. I'm not saying this because I have a PS3 and want to justify my purchase but it's because it's what I actually beleive - this is what annoys me, you seem to think that I'm making stuff up and that I'm secretly dissapointed with my purchase when I'm anything but.[/quote]

Yes I do see and I think it's a good thing. It will even up the market and increase competition, they could have done with more competition with the PS2 tbh. People on here seem to think that this is going to finish Sony off, when at worst I see MS and Sony having something like an even market share.
Mr Latte said:

It is a big price difference, but I think people will perceive the PS3 as being newer technology as it's the latest console out - also the high price will capatalise on the people who always buy the latest console at launch. Launch price has always been higher - the PS2 was about £300 and people paid it, so surely 7 years on £425 isn't that much higher with inflation considered! If the premium units don't shift in Europe then surely Sony will release the 20Gb version as well.

Were there any games on the PS1 which showed it up as being superior to the N64? or the PS2 against the Xbox? In both instances I beleive that Sony had the poorer system. Maybe the PS3 will be shown up as being the poorer system again, it's difficult to compare as they are quite close performance wise but time will tell. Also I think the majority of people like playing their old favourites like FIFA, PES, PGA, GTA etc (this is where EA have capatilised) which will be out for both systems. Sure there are people who will buy a console for exclusives but it's no where near the percentage which you think.

Why does it need to win on it's own merits - Is that why a huge amount of people held out for the PS2 rather than buying a Dreamcast? Theres a lot to be said for the buying power of the masses plus there's over 250 games either in progress or on the drawing board so it will certainly have it's share of the games shelves too.
Mr Latte said:

But it isn't though is it - it's the same people who where here the last time around. It's not like everybody who ever owned either an Xbox or PS2 has died and we have a fresh shipment of gameplayers who have just arrived. Everyone has their own preferences, but the amount of people who I have spoke to who are holding out for a PS3 before they are willing to participate in next gen gaming is remarkable - at least as many as were holding out for the PS2.

Thing is though, that is At the moment, Companies have been developing for the 360 for what maybe 30 months now? Only a few dev's will have had there final dev kit much longer than 14-16 months

well there are 2 basketball games out now, so if EA canned there i wouldn't be surprised lol

Joebob, damn your contineous quotes do my head in and its the quoitng everything, grrr makes it so awkward to read cant you reply with just answers?

I think you have proven your loyality to the end but are blinded a bit with it.

We will see, i have shown enough reasons why the PS3 isnt going to be number one this time around, you on the other hand firmly believe that brand awarenes goes beyond all the advantages the X360 currently has as i mentioned several times to your disgust.

Even to the point with all the software advantages and a fact the X360 could one day be 1/2 the price of a PS3 you still believe. Thats a lot of faith.

I feel confident brand loyality doesnt stretch that far....

Why people mention Sega and the Dreamcast , its a system that never had enough support simple as that. You cant compare Microsofts X360 and Segas Dreamcast, totally worlds apart from company infastructure and presence in the market
