Ok i have a friend who can get me a PS3 for $500 coz he coming across from the USA

to buy one here is gonna cost me £400
for him to get me one its gonna cost me £250

Is it worth it , what are the cons of buying a US version

are they region locked will UK blue ray disc not work on it?
will all regional PS3 games work on any PS3 ?

please help me before he leaves to head over here

only thing that is region locked is the Blu-Ray movies.
Which tbh works out quite well because it means you can buy the movies from the US, and i have found they tend to be about 50% cheaper than on the high street.
Other than that everything works hunky dory. I have had a US PS3 since december, not had any issues, also the remote control works fine with my JAP PSP, so no issues there neither.

One thing to note would be warranty, it wouldnt be covered over here in the UK. Not sure if Sony USA would send a replacement back to the UK either if you sent it to them.

warrenty isnt an issue as i can mail it to him first to his home address they he sends off for repair

Go for it at that price, they will be £299 at xmas so you're still saving £50, apparantly reliability is the PS3s strong point so no worries about returning it to USA.

Doesnt the US PS3 have a better PS2 chip or something?

the older us ps3's have the emotion engine chip inbuilt so its kind of a ps3 with a ps2 inside for backwards compatibility, the new us and all uk ps3's use software for BC, its still good and with the current firmware gets upscaled lovely but isnt as reliable as having the EE built in.

Oh and PS2 games are region locked so if you're bothered about playing PS2 games, you'll have to get USA versions.

Hi Jumpurs

Do you need a power converter for the ntsc ps3 to work here in the UK

yes you do....

the USA run on 110 volts the UK uses 230, you will fry it plugging it in to are sockets

i bought a portable dvd player from folrida 3 years back and had to buy an adapter that reduced the voltage

Nope, PS3s are all nicely fitted with multivoltage PSUs so they run at 100-110v or 230-240v accordingly. Just use a lead from any PC PSU or kettle lead.

TBH... I went into asda yesterday & looked at regions (I have a JAP PS3)... there were about 8 blu-ray disks on the shelf and half of them were region-free, including ghost rider and superman off the top of my head.... so it's not so hard to pick someregion free blu ray goodness up at your local shop :)

The only thing I can think of that actually interests me that's supposedly region locked is 300 and I pre-ordered that from the US for Under £10 shipped... half the price it will cost in the uk! lol
