PS3 woes..

So I picked up my shiny new PS3 today along with Casino Royale and Black Hawk down on BR + Sega Rally, COD4, a very expensive HDMI cable and a second sixaxis controller.

All came to around £450.

Plugged it all together - hooked it up to my 37" 1080p Samsung TV.

PS3 detected the HDMI cable and automatically optimised to 1080p. Fine so far.

Then I put COD4 into the drive and loaded it up. To my dismay it's very grainy and the absence of AA is hugely evident - especially on the gun the character's holding!

Am I doing something wrong? I have read its sometime better to reduce to 720p? I have just sold my PC (E6600 + 8800GTS) to add to my misery :(

Next gen my @rse! Oh dear!

hmmm. does the game run in 720p? the reason im asking is because there was a problem with the game. it is supposed to support everything up to 1080p but it wont run in 1080p unless you disable 720p support in the ps3's sytem settings.

give it a go and see if theres a difference.

i'll refrain from asking you why you bought an expensive hdmi cable:(

Do you play your pc games on the same screen too?

Nope - PC games were played on a Samsung 19" TFT.

The PS3 menus look fine, and Sega Rally looked slightly better (I've just looked at the game's case and it states 720p - COD4 states 720p/1080i/1080p).

Some of the vids I've seen showing COD4 have looked awesome - these were (apparently) non-rendered PS3 clips. What I'm seeing on my TV isn't the same.

You expect a £350 portable machine to outdo a PC with those high end components?

I'm not sure what you mean by grainy but I would guess that the lack of AA is because you're running at 1080p so the devs sacrifice AA for higher res?

No need to roll eyes dude. The rig had to go as it was taking up too much space.

I'm not expecting a PS3 to better my rig - but something near par would have been good! COD4 looks like a PS2 game.

Without screenies it's hard to tell whether:

a: It looks as it should and your expectations were too high

b: There is actually a problem causing it to look worse than it should.

Try unticking 1080p from the PS3's video options. I doubt the game will run very good at 1080p even if it supports it. This is the pain with the PS3, you want most games to run at 720p and only use 1080p for Blu-ray, so you have to keep going back and altering the settings.

i dont have any performance problems with games that run at 1080p

just experimenting, the ps3 reacts quite strangely to the output setting you use in regards to scaling. with a 720p game, it'll output at 720p if you have 720p enabled of course. but if you disable 720p and leave 1080p enabled, it will output at 1080p BUT the resolution is not 1080p. its not 720p either, because the image because quite blurred. i actually think its 576p upscaled to 1080p, but thats just a guess. weird lol.

edit: its not 576p. i dont actually know what it is lol. unless it is 720p but the ps3's (game) scaler is just crap lol

edit2: here you go

on the top is the ratchet demo outputting 720p to my 1080p sony 40w.
on the bottom, is ratchet outputting 1080p (with the 720p setting unticked) but notice the difference?

that does look quite bad to be honest. from what i've seen cod4 on the ps3 and 360 look pretty similar, but i have to say it's looks much better than that on my 360.

get a 360 instead. none of this configuration lark. just set the display resolution to what you what and off you go. it just works :)
