Sources are everywhere so I wont bother linking.

But yesterday both MS and Sony announced they have 17 million users on there network.

In this 17 million MS are also counting silver (free) accounts.

So I'm a little stumped as to how Sony have managed to get 17 million accounts. I'm not suggesting they are lying. I just cant comprehend it. I suppose I need a survey or something lol.

Anyone else find this is little surprising?

I don't find it surprising at all. I know people who use their 360's on a portable TV in their 6 year old kids bedroom. You will not find a PS3 in places like that. The fact that PSN is totally free probably helps too.

To be honest though these figures are not that accurate really as many people have multiple PSN and XBL accounts. I've got an XBL account but don't own a Xbox for example!

That doesn't really add to PS3 accounts though

Infinity Ward Community Manager Robert Bowling Fourzerotwo has released some player statisticalz from a little game called Call of Duty 4. The data, pulled on Jan. 3, reveals that 10 million unique users have played CoD 4 on Xbox 360 and connected to Live "at least once" after playing.

Going deeper down the fox hole (yes, it's called a mixed metaphor), Infinity Ward checked specific data on certain levels:

* 71.1%, or 7,111,508 people have completed F.N.G.
* 68.8%, or 6,886,509 people have completed Cargo Ship.
* 46.5%, or 5,654,643 people have beaten the game on any difficulty.
* 2.8%, or 283,632 people have completed Airplane on Veteran difficulty.

Comparatively, pulling the multiplayer numbers from PSN revealed 4,381,276 unique users.

Im led to belive that the 17 million Live accounts are for gold only, it is a LTD, so it includes all who had an xbox live account on the original one, even if they dont have one now. Sony said they had 2.1 million new users in the last month, along with 300k LBP levels at CES earlier today.

That's not what was said yesterday when watching the live CES keynote. The "majority" are gold.

Katoom, it's PSN network accounts. Same on all platforms isn't it?

That's interesting, probably gives us a better indication of usage than Sony or MS saying they have X many users. Would be nice if more companies did that.

Just shows you how clever MS are, the amount of money they have made from Xbox Live compared to the amount of money Sony have lost/losing from offering free PSN.

I've got two XBL accounts but don't actually own a 360.

My missus has a PSN account but has used it once.

Both figures are in no way representative of how many people actually use the service (as many people have already said)

Them Call of Duty 4 statistics are amazing. Would love to see more stats released. Thats what this console generation needs, more stats :p

Woohoo, I'm in the Elite 3% :D

Around £550million on the bases that the the average price for gold would be between £25(cheapest) - £40(RRP) = (£32.5). And thats just for one year :p
