PSN Question

I have a really simple question concerning the Playstation Network and the PSP. I have a PSPGo and I'm about to download Metal Gear Solid for the PSP, but it has to be from the American PSN because it's not yet been released on the European store. Will there be any problems in me downloading/playing the game on my PSP?

Cheers in advance, and while I wait replies I'll do a Google search too, so I'm not totally lazy. :)

I can't speak specifically about the Go, but with my PSP3000, the content you can access is restricted to a single PSN account's ownership.

Example - If you're downloading MGS through your US account, when you come to transfer it to PSP you will be told that the PSP is registered to another PSN account, 'Do you wish you change to this account?'. If you agree to, any content purchashed through your original UK PSN account will be locked until you re-register with that initial account.

i would assume this would be the same for the PSPGo.

It will play no problem but the PSP can only be registered with a single PSN account at a time so any games registered to your regular PSN account won't be playable while it is activated to play MGS on the US account.

(you can 'quickly' switch activations by logging into the account on the PSP then go to download something from your download list, it will then give you the option to activate for that account and you can then just cancel the download).

The PSP desperately needs the ability to have multiple PSN accounts active at the same time. :(

I don't know wether the registering of the PSP is an automatic process, but when I created my ID to log into the Playstation Store, I don't remember it asking me the number of my PSP or anything like that?

I'll have to do a little more Googling, but I'm desperate to get the old classics on my PSP :)

It's a shame they haven't released MGS on the European store yet because it's one of my favourites.

EDIT: The American store lets me log in with my European account, I'm not sure wether this means I won't have to switch accounts to play the game? But I'm just downloadng an update for Media Go and then I'll report back here on how it goes.

GAHHH! When you try and download it obviously isn't available on the European store so that isn't working, which means it looks like I'll have to do the above and switch accounts when I want to play. Hardly seems worth the hassle even though it's one of my favourite games of the last 12 years. :(

If you can see the US store then your not logged in with the Europe account. In order to download anything from the US store you'll need to make a separate PSN account for the US region. You'll have to put in a US address (choose a state that doesn't pay tax on PSN sales too ;)), and add funds to the wallet either by purchasing american PSN cards or using something like Entropay... there's details in the PS3 sticky.

Ahhh thanks. I think I may wait until this game is put onto the European store then. It seems like a lot of hassle just to play one game. I wish they'd just make it easier, or even give us the games that we're missing out on. It hardly seems fair at times. :(

Ohh. :(

I thought that it came out on the American store this year, and the Japanese store in 2008. I was kind of hoping that we'd have it by Christmas, if it doesn't come out in the next few months then I'll see about doing the American thing, if only I'd have known before hand I would have downloaded all my games from the American store.

Yeah I know what you mean... the PSOne Classics on the European Store are poor to say the least...

Definitely. Who decided that "Disney's A Bugs Life" on the PSX is a classic game and worthy of a place on the store over Gran Turismo or MGS? It's absolutely pathetic. We pay more, we get less and we always come back for more. Way to slap us in the face over here Sony.

I am on the verge of selling my Go or trading it in for a 3000 as tbh its not that useful if theres no A class games, we litterally have all the trash PSX games and some of the worst PSP games ever released, the only good ones as Resistance, the Syphon filters, Monster Hunter, Motorstorm and GT we just dont have the selection. The only thing thats putting me off of the 3000 is its bulkyness (inc games). I just see the Go going the way of the old pocket station.

Do Sony charge the 16c per download or per purchase and download, i.e. do they charge the Devs 48c if I download the same game 3 times (perhaps from formating my PSP, or to other devices), as if thats the case surely Sony are actively trying to hamper the Go.

I'm sure SCEE would love to release MGS but as it's not their game it's up to Konami to submit it for release and for whatever reason they don't seem to be in a rush to do this.

Your actually better buying PSOne games from the US store in my opinion. Generally speaking the NTSC version of PSOne games were superior to the PAL versions as very few were optimised for PAL which resulted in most of our games either running with borders or at a decreased speed. In the case of MGS in particular, from what I understand, even though it was optimised for PAL in that it ran full screen the PSOne struggled with the increased resolution which resulted it in running noticeably slower than the NTSC version.

I just switch between my Euro account and my US account as and when I need to :)
Means I can still play the likes of Wild Arms, Suikoden and Silent Hill through my US account but can also switch back to play Final Fantasy VII on my Euro account.

It is a bit of a daft way of doing it but I'd rather do that than miss out on all the good US games!

On your PSP or PS3? On the PS3 there is no need to switch accounts, all PS1/PSP games work on any account. On the PSP you have to swap around as only 1 PSN account can be active on a PSP at any one time, and only games purchased on the current activated account will load, unless you swap.

On the PSP :) And yeah I know only one account can be active at any one time, it's still daft though ;) The iPhone manages to deal with it much better imo.

Didn't even know iPhones can handle content from multiple iTunes stores?

I understand why they do it, the same reason iTunes etc only allow content in certain countries etc, but for the end user it is probably not an issue as non techhie people probably don't even know there are different stores, let alone have the ability to buy from multiple ones.

It is a crap system either way, after buying 2 UK games and 6 USA games, I never bought anymore UK PSP/PS1 games due to the hassle. Sony would probably make more money if they released 100 PS1/PSP games tomorrow on the store rather than some of the overpriced digital PSP games they sell, the only thing stopping them is licensing and stuff, which can;t be that hard to sort out, considering the near 90% profit they probably make on every single one of these 7yr + old games.

Yeah iPhones can handle content from different iTunes stores. I review a number of games on the iPhone and have an US account so that I can use US redeemable codes.
Regardless of which account I'm logged in on, I can run the various games and apps :) No need to switch between the two every time I want to load an app, like the way the PSP deals with it.
