Good day people.

My daughter recently asked me for a gameboy (Shes watching a lot of 80/90's movies) which im sure i had somewhere in the loft but just cannot find one.

I did however find my old PSP the original release version PSP-1000, i have been struggling to charge it or even get it working unable to find the original charger i found everything i had in the house but nothing worked.
I ended up amazoning a replacement cable but im still having issues powering it up.

I managed to get to on intermittingly but was displaying no charge lights when switched off when i eventually powered it successfully it died once cable was removed, also the battery health display listed no battery details at all.

I have tried reddit/youtube searched etc and found various faults but wanted to ask her if anybody's had this specific issue?

Ive seen dodgy charge ports , batterys dead and also CMOS battery replacements too.

I'm hoping to revive this, them old gameboys are going for crazy money :o

If you're still using the original battery, it's probably no good. You can rebuild them with new cells, or just buy a new 3rd party replacement (what I did). I would now avoid a new old stock OEM battery, or anything claiming to be, as they have been out of production for some time and probably are also no good.

I can't recall if the 1000 can power up with just the cable and no battery in - did you try that?

I think the starting point is going to be to replace the original battery, as mentioned by @alex24. Then if that doesn't work you should be able to work through any other potential problems in terms of likeliness. I remember the PSP having quite a big AC power pack for it's size rather than being simple USB charging (same as the Nintendo DS I suppose).

Used to love the PSP back in the day (never got on with the Vita as much). Used it a lot on my commute although for me it was at its best as one of two things; Firstly as an 'Everybody's Golf' machine (it had two of the best in the series) and secondly really came alive once soft-modded so you could use mSD cards and run games from the SD card rather than the UMDs. I did also have the official Sony Extended battery (I don't think it officially released in the UK) that required the separate larger battery cover. Although I suspect it's long since been bettered as a machine for emulation I can imagine it's worth looking into this just for the QoL improvement it brings.

And yea, Game Boys are silly money. As someone with a soft spot for the larger DS/3DS models I've also noticed those can be expensive too.

Ive not tried that yet, just fetched the psp into work as we have a battery tester and the battery was jammed right in there looks to expanded 50% bubbled in fact so i think that explains a lot :D

I will test it when im home without the battery is removed, ive ordered a new battery from amazon just really hope it works!

I would imagine it probably will work if the battery was in that state. There are issues with some 3rd party batteries not really being the size claimed, but it's not that big a deal if you soft-mod and run from SD card as it will consume less power than running UMDs. I would also plan to order a microsd and adapter so you can do that and load it up with your backups and any other home-brew/emulators etc. I've done that with a 3000. I had a 1000 as well but didn't bother as the screen was a bit of a smeary mess by todays standards, but if you want the real experience that's it. The IPS mod in the MVG video above looked really good though, if you have the skills to do it. There's actually loads of good games for PSP and the home-brew and emulation scene is pretty mature so it's definitely worth spending a little to bring it back up and running imo.

Yeah sounds like a battery issue, I had a PSP-3000 that had been sitting for a few years that I ended up replacing the batt and it was fine.
I'm always tempted by another - have a Switch but sometimes would like a smaller more portable device that I could load some retro and native stuff onto and leave in a bag (could just pickup an Ambernic I guess) - recently had a bit of an urge to look at an actual console instead of emulating all of my older stuff.

Hello guys just a little update i had some issues with shipping etc but it came when i was away and i finally got round to trying it out.

Instantly the new battery worked straight away it came almost fully charged and the recharger via cable is working perfectly.

Its been volleyed all over my loft so i was very surprised it still worked well happy , i daughter tried it for about 5 seconds and not bothered so it was a complete waste anyways but i might get a huge memory card sorted and get the whole game collection on there as my homebrew stuff still works a treat

Get a PSP to SD adapter so you can use cheaper MicroSD cards. Change the software so you can avoid having to load your own games from the UMD drive (also saves batteries)

Buy the girl a gameboy you animal :( I restore and sell a ton of gameboys. Cheapest are the dmg and pocket and then it goes up from there with a nicely modded colour being close to 200 for a really nice one.

What's the advantage of spending that much on a colour when you could get something like the Analogue Pocket

Original hardware is pretty much the only argument, nowdays you can you can make them pretty nice, the analogue pocket for sure has a load of advantages but it doesn't give that original feel. Take a game gear, throw say sonic chaos in it and its a laggy mess :D, thats how it was... throw that same game on an analogue pocket and im sure it will run beautifully. It's just original hardware, simple as that really. For the gameboy color add some lipo's, an amp perhaps (the gameboy color volume is the worst of all the gameboys), you can even go full custom on the shell... People love em... I love building them.

Well I respect your argument, you've now done the mods, so it's no longer original?

its not emulation basically I can put an original cart in there and it plays it on the original chips. What you think of the mods etc to make it more usable is beside the point.

Can anyone recommend a decent replacement battery for a PSP 1000?

There are dozens out there and I can’t tell which are more credible replacements due to all the mixed reviews :(

this is the one i ordered its been working perfectly

I was recently given an absolutely immaculate white original PSP, girl at works dad had an office desk clear out and found it at the back covered in dust.

In an nice official carry case and had ace combat in the drive too! WINNER!

I have had several in the past and 99% of the problems have been based around the old battery and voltage drop / swell etc. Battery is pretty much always the first thing to change over, I have used Amazon specials a few times and they have been bob on and normally higher capacity :)

Fingers crossed she fires up for you!
