PSU 12v rail question

8600 GT and X2 4200+ use nowhere near 500 Watt, they over-estimate to account for dodgy or old PSUs.

Wattage on the box means nothing (in isolation), power distribution (modern rigs use the +12v rail mostly) and sustainable, clean power output are what matters.

You can't trust manufacturer +12v ratings either as some are peak, some sustainable and some just mean the max load till it trips.

Yep. Will be fine - i'm sure of it!

Power wise the Q-TEC you've been using could only be compared with a mid range 250-300w PSU at the very best. Add their terrible reliability issues and you have a recipe for disaster. The rated 500w requirement for the 8600gt is innacurate as a PC running that card and with an X2 in place should only be pulling 200w at the very most.

My old PC consisted of an e2160 overclocked to 3.2ghz and a 3870X2 graphics card. At 100% full load it drew 321w at the plug socket. Assuming the power supply was a very efficient one that would mean the PC was using only 257w.

TBH, i'd be surprised if my present rig drew more than 350 watts at full load.

Back on topic (and more specifically to your PSU) it's not just the failing that is the issue, more the fact that when they do go pop they tend to take other components with them. A decent PSU in the event of a failure should not destroy other components.

The corsair should do you fine. :)

well ive ordered a Corsair one but the Q-Tec one was one i bought from a friend so i could use my 8600GT as i'd been running an ATi X1600 Pro on a 250w :embarassed: and it blew. So i needed a new one plus a few months after my ATi gave up after 2 years.

Steer clear of Hiper too.

well that almost answer the above question...i know ther was a run of exploding hipers awhile back ...but wasnt that confined to the 580R or something....?

those hiper425w seem like a pretty good budget psu.

hmm....buying a 300w fujihondakawayamasuzuki for a fiver is buying a cheap psu, surely 25 notes is starting to get into the realms of not too bad for the budget end of the market.

and before anyone asks no im not running one in my machine, ive got a tagan 480 which runs my [email protected] watercooled and 8800gts just fine. where as there is one in my wifes machine a intel2180@3ghz and a 8800gs which seems to be running sweet as a nut.

Decent PSU for a modern rig is around £10 per 100 Watts. There are a lot of different components and design features in a PSU that make it worth the dosh, cheap Chinese caps are one, with one particular brand commonly referred to in a way I can't repeat on OCUK, as it is family friendly.

Poor design = kills your PSU, kills your components (ripple, dirty power blows mobos well) and ends up costing you more!

Yes there are some that aren't bad and you'll (pretty much without exception) find someone who has run a known bad-brand PSU without issue for years but it just isn't worth it, even a "cheap" modern rig costs £300ish so why risk it?

Fuhjyyu 29 up, 1 down
pronounced foo-j-U

(1) Chinese word for feces.

(2) Brand name of abysmal quality capacitors that are installed on logic boards, switching power supplies and various other electronic components. They are known to rupture and leak out electrolyte when exposed to temperatures 45 C + for extended periods.
(1) I just took a huge fuhjyyu, damn that felt good.

(2) My computer keeps rebooting on it's own, must be those Fuhjyyu capacitors, time to RMA the 5th replacement.

please don't ban me, I was answering a request :(

I'll leave you to figure out how it can be pronounced :p

ok so what about the Hiper 425W HPU-4S425 Silent ATX2.01 PSU

34amps on the 12v rail

or the Gigabyte SUPERB 460w PSU

29amps on *** 12v rail

either of those any good for a 8800gt, what about a gtx260 or a ati 4850 or even 4870...?

I'm sure its been pointed out before but you can't (oops) just add the rails together in most cases. Look for the combined wattage value for the 12v output.

The Hiper you have there has a combined 12v wattage of less than 300W, around 25A@12v.

i assume you meant to say you cant just add the rails together, anyway i always assumed that when a psu states +12v 1 - 17A and +12v 2 - 17A that ment that it had 34amps availible for the 12v system.
