PSU needed to run 2x5970's and overheating problems ?

Nice. Gets great review on driverheaven. Is it more suitable than the Corsair HX1000 I already own for running 5970's though ? I doubt it myself as it just manages 20amp on each of it's 12v rails, which is the 8 pin pci-e requirment to run a 5970.

Enermax Galaxy Evo. 30a 12v rails.

If you can find one, a PC P & C unit, 100a + single 12v rail.

I just had a look over on H@xus and they did a comprehensive review of 5970's in crossfire. Seems it uses around 90 watts less than a pair of GTX 295's under load, under 600watts for a full system with same cpu as myself. Now I ran a pair of GTX's in my current rig for about a month (they were my brother's and didn't buy them as was waiting for 58xx series), with both cards squashed together thanks to the pci-e setup on the rampage. They idled in the mid to high fifties, and never got temps over 85 due to controlling the fan speeds with rivatuner/msi afterburner. The HX1000 wasn't an issue either. So I am thinking now, if I had the cash and the cards were available, I could simply swap out my pair of 5870's for 5890's. No need for a board with better pci-e slot spacing I think. Plus those Asus supercomputer boards are a horrendous price. And no need for a new PSU.

Some gamers I believe play counterstike at low res's as they say it improves their fps's which helps reaction time.

Oh, I know someone else who has pre-ordered 3x5870's and he has planned to hook up to a 42" Samsung TV. Max res is 1366x768. In fact when I think about it, I've met a good few people with 720p tv screens with sli/quad sli/crossfire setups who don't seem to get the resolution/scaling thing. They think lower res is better as they will get more frames with faster cards.

Clearly has more money then sense sadly money is genreally wasted on the stupid.

“The only real valuable thing is intuition.”

You defo need a better monitor, I would call you stupid but many years ago I remember I kept spending money rather stupidly :p

Has the purple shirts forum closed down as there seems to be a massive influx this year of new members putting down overkill setups who simply dont understand that overkill itself can be very pleasurable & that everyone's money circumstances vary greatly.

Not everyone is a full out eccentric PC enthusiast who likes to push things to the max but that does not mean that the ones that do should be always set upon & who's to say that a new bigger monitor may not be on the cards in the future.

How long would a 5970 last in terms of games coming out? because im thinking of upgrading from my 4870x2 to a 5970 next year, i dont want a gpu for 1 or 2 years. Would like a gpu for 3 years. Would i need to add a second in order to get that?

IMO in 2-3 years there will be much better gpus however the games will not advance so far... so I say a 5970 will last you 3 years... if you crossfire then it will last a lot more than 3

The thing is, people keep saying a 24" 1920x1200 is wasted on 5870 crossfire not to mention 5970 quadfire. But just look at the benches H*xus did at 1920x1200 on a stock i7 975 with the 5xxx series. Clearly large gains going from 1 5870/5970 to 2 of them. And while 1 card may be plenty at 1920, having 2 clearly means you can max out on AA, AF and a few other settings and have better minimum framerates.
