PSU Noise

Im gunna have to stick with my noisy PSU then, cant afford a new one.

Quick question, if i drop the voltage of my fan will it affect it in any way.

It's likely to get hot and go pop! and take some other components with it. Sorry but the PSU is not worth scrimping on. Live with the noise or provide more airflow to or around the PSU.

Andi.

It is but as i said i just bought a new case which cost me £90, no money at the moment. Back to my last question, will dropping the voltage affect it?

or does a PSU even need a fan?

yes a psu needs a fan, if yours does I don't know.

It may have a 850w label on it, but its real power is probably closer to 350w.

Its very similar to cheap hifi brands when they rate their systems using PMPO instead of RMS power.

Cheap PSUs tend to use a fast noisy fan to compensate for the lack of heatsinks to keep things cool. Removing the fan will be a very bad thing as it'll warm up and go bang. You might be able to swap it for a slower speed/better fan with a simple but slightly dangerous fan swap mod.

Mind you at the power you will be drawing with your AMD and 5770 will be low enough that even if you halve your fan speed it'll probably still be fine.

Oh wait the installed fan is 13.8cm. Fail. I suppose you could add a resistor in line on the positive power wire.

He changed his post.

Fair enough ill have to save up. Be a while i just feel like ive wasted £90 on a case that isnt doing its job.

a case can only be as quiet as the components you put in it.

unless you completely seal it and soundproof it then noise will always escape.

Thanks for everyones help, i might replace the fan with a lower RPM one. But i'll most likely put up with it until i can afford a decent one. Im sure OCZ or corsair should be good.

I would suggest you do not mod a PSU at all.

I suggest you purchase a good quality unit.

I am the buyer for PSU's at OcUK so I would hope I know what I'm talking about.

Hmmmm.

What happened to those ADATA psu's?

And why is the Enermax range so barren?

Seeing as im on a next-to-nothing budget, i mayswell ask... Anybody got a silent PSU going spare?

Also, are these as silent as they make out?

I haven't heard one but I really doubt if they are. If you want truly silent you'll need deep pockets for the top line Seasonic or Corsair series that only spin up their fans when at high loading.

The fan swap mod I mentioned would only be a temporary solution to save your immediate sanity, you'd need to get a decent unit eventually. I nodded my OCZ SXS1 unit because I felt it was too noisy in my P183 rig. It now spins at about 1100rpm rather than 1500rpm and is still the noisiest component apart from the loaded graphics card.
