is there any way to test the 12v pci-e rails on my psu, my gcard was rma'd but found to be ok, on a fresh install of windows the pc would boot up until it got to the win 8 logo and spinning dots then just black screen, but there was still a signal, so i thought if my psu had partially failed that could be the cause maybe, its an enermax platimax 600watt psu, any ideas...

i think if i leave the pci-e cables unconnected to the gcard the motherboard should bleep to indicate not enough power, and if it doesnt bleep then i guess there must be a problem with the psu...
 
its possible if the PSU has multiple 12v rails.

I have an old Corsair PSU with only 2 of the 4 PCIe sockets work.

I just keep it about for running my water cooling pump when filling the loop so I dont have to use the one in the case.
 
my psu only has 2 pcie sockets but you get a 8pin and 6pin on the same cable, i also tried swapping them but no joy....i guess i could use the molex converters to power the gcard, probably not recommended but will save on a new psu?
 
looks like it only has 3 12v rails from the manual max 50a, 25a on single rail.
pics in the manual are rubbish,
can you post a pic of the rear of your psu where the cables plug in (is your main mb and mb power supply cable built in ? )?

1 socket will be 1 12v rail, so you need both pcie's plugged in to your gpu,
(ignore my prev post....a part from max 50a and 25a per rail)
 
Ignore the multiple rails, it doesn't have them. It has 3 separate current-limited groups/lines, this won't cause a fault unless you were overloading one of these groups, which I'm pretty sure your not.

If the PSU is the cause, it could be a component failing and the PSU just not outputting enough power to run the card. Or a bad cable/connection so no current is getting though at all.

I had a PSU with a no output on the 4+4 pin +12V, this was an old P4 system (it wasn't old at the time). It would power up to XP screen and then fail.
