PSWii60 - comparison

That's a very balanced review. .well done!!

I've got all 3 consoles as well, and I can agree on 90% of that, although my PS3 is actually on loan from my brother, so it's not my own hard earned cash that went into it, so I don't always give it the same attention I would if it where physically mine.. although I have finished RfoM/MS and am dabbling on F1 and playing the GT:HD Demo when I get the time..

My only minor addition to the 360's capabilities would be, you can add the HD-DVD drive, and it integrates superbly with windows XP MCE/Vista, with minimal 3rd party software on my PC, I'm able to stream natively all my HD films and DVD's/Music/Divx/XVids.. , you can plug in a USB device/IPod/MP3 PLayer and play the music off that, etc..

I wish more people on here had a more balanced view of these things!!>.

One thing for sure, my Wii will never be sold, it's just too much family fun, even just for Wii Sports.. I'm actually happy to get my 3 year old daughter involved playing games..

Nice to see a review of all 3 consoles :)

Overall: It's a very difficult one to chose as the best to be honest, as whilst I prefer the PS3 over the 360 for comfort it lacks a little in weight and there are certain games where the reversal of d-pad and stick actually makes more sense. The Wii is great for getting animated with but, lacks some appeal when playing standard couch potato games and the range seems to be a little short so you may need to move that sofa nearer to the telly. I haven't bothered to mention rumble as it's a feature I have always found annoying and mostly turned off anyway! I guess that chosing between the 360 and PS3 controllers is down to opersonal choice and many will probably find the 360 controller more comfortable but I guess that over 10 years gaming on a PS style pad has moulded my hands to fit it perfectly.

How can force feedback be annoying? It immerses you more into the game and it is one of the many reasons at the moment I wouldn't buy a PS3. I personally think the Wii is one of the best controllers ever made because your not holding it like the others, it's seperate pieces in both your hands and it's therefore much more comfortable. So I would have to disagree with you there :p

Like you said though it is down to personal preference but I can't understand why people like the Playstation controller when they haven't changed the design of it since the first Playstation. All they did with the Dualshock was add rumble and two analogue parts to an old controller, and they have still kept it that way with the D-Pad being where the analogue should really be.

I bet Sony will release a new controller with rumble built in later down the line like they did with the DualShock for the first Playstation, but will probably keep everything where it was.

Basically, Wii > 360 > PS controller

That doesn't mean to say that I think the consoles in general are in that order though, too early to judge that at the moment.

Although I like the Wii Control, I have to say, I could not sit and play Final Fantasy for aslong as I do now with it. It's not built for comfort and long term gaming, It's built for short bursts of fun.

People may disagree, But thats my finding

Maybe thats the very reason why we like it. It's what we are used to and soemtimes a change isnt as good as a rest. Microsfts controller is not that different really is it? It has all the same buttons but with different labels and a very very similar layout and feel (compared to other controllers over the last few gens), but on balance I prefer the PS as it's what Im used to so going over to a different controller to me would be like trying to play a fps on the PC using one of them ergonomical split keyboards for typists - fine if thats what your used to but a bit awkward if your not!

Well, I'd say that preference on controller is directly related to the type of game you play. Personally, I'd say that the 360 controller is the best I've ever used for FPS and racing games due to the layour and triggers, but is abysmal for ProEvo type games where you need to reach between buttons quickly and easily. The PS pad on the other hand is ideal for that type of game, but I find it awful for racing and fps games.

btw, I like racing and fps games, so the 360 pad is by far my favourate, but I can appreciate that not everyone likes these and it's all subjective anyway.

360 = what can I say other than OMG! from the moment you turn it on you realise it's noisier than the other two but then when the DVD drive kicks in it steps the whole noise level up a notch from mildly irritating to outright annoying - this in my opinion is as big an issue for MS to address as the reliability issues.

I'd just like to add that my 360 is no where near that noisy. I'd be hard pressed to say it was even noticeable unless you listen very closely with no other sound source in the room. :)

The 360 controller feels much much more ergonomic than the PS one. It's more akin to the N64 one.

I disagree very strongly. My 6 hour bursts on the Wii have been much more kind to my hands than FFVII on the PSone.

Yeah but I think from the varying descriptions of the noise levels some 360's are A LOT louder than others.
I was talking about controllers. But yeah it seems like some are louder than others but I would put that down to the acoustics of the surroudnings more than the actual console being louder. Mine is really loud but then it's situated under a staircase with three walls in close range for the noise to bounce off, whereas my lad has his on and it seems a lot quieter until you get close and then you realise it's actually the same volume.

Nah, my 3 have all been very different in terms of loudness and all were located in identical positions.

Good points Joebob.

I would say you should try the 360 via component instead of the VGA (get a phono adapter or switcher (so wii and 360 can connect)
Some people are preferring the 1080i output over the 720p output since the last major update even people with 1366 panels sometimes see a difference.

The noise of the 360 can be a major issue, imo its its biggest problem but again this is down to placement and having it sitting out beside a telly could cause an earache.

One of the nice features i love with the 360 actually is the streaming of music from portable devices or USB key and combined with Vista Media Centre can be a stylish way of showing off some of your personal media/photos, its something you should look into perhaps one day.

Tilt does nothing for me personally (cant teach an old dog new tricks perhaps) and i feel the lack of rumble is a bigger loss from a game enchancement tool. Taks COD3 for example even the 360 version used silly controls with the analouge for a more natural feel to set charges etc but really does moving the analouge stick in a rotary position increase the fun, well not for me it didnt. Kinda trying to immatate the tilt functionality their i thought.

What is important for any system is the enjoyment it brings you and at the end of the day we all game for fun. Although consoles are becoming rather complicated things and of course not just about gaming now but actual media delivery and connectivity devices.

Also by the sound of things youve seen just how incredible GOW looks amongst others and from an eye candy point of view the x360 system should have some spectacular looking titles this year.

Interesting comparison - and a good review

It will be an interesting comparison in a year or 18 months to see if the graphics ability of the PS3 has got closer to the X360 after the programmers have got more used to revealing its abilities.

I just recall clearly how the PS2 was good when first released (or rather the software was) but how over time the software being incomparable due to the depth and quality increases

Im not for one second suggesting the X360 hasnt got just as many hidden talents- it may well do - I would just think its reasonable that a brand new release has more potential to grow, and get closer in this regard.

I just wish that the wii was more readily available as I would really like to try zelda and a few others

The technology is from pretty much the exact same time though.

I might give it a go at 1366 x 768 as this is supposed to be the optimum resolution for my TV set. I cant really be fussed with having switch boxes just to get a little more out of it tbh.

With regards to the noise I would love to crack it open and have a go at modding it myslef to quiten it down (cost me nothing so losing nothing if it borks) but obviousley we cant discuss this on here - weird how we can talk about overclocking PC's Gfx cards etc but not cooling consoles?

I think the games coming out for with tilt enabled are being a bit ambitious as they are going for total control with it rather than using it as a small addition to the regular control method. I think the first game to truly use it like this will be MGS as you need to give the control a quick flick to tip over a barrell over you may be hiding in etc, RFOM had something similar but I think MGS will make better use.

Yeah Gears looks great although I havent played it much tbh as I have gotten into Saints Row and my wife seems to be well into Viva Pinata so I dont get time at the minuite :(
