Pubs open later for VE Day 80th Anniversary

I thought pubs could apply for a 24 hour license now a days? not that may do...

Pub culture is dying due to so many pubs shutting down.

pubs shutting down as pub culture is dead....

back in the days; and I'm not that old... I could go for a few at the local and grab a takeaway on the way home.
take aways close early now a days as local councils charge extra for late opening hours.

The only time I really go to pubs now a days, is to grab some food and the drinks happens to be there and at Christmas where the "blokes" make themselve useful by disappearing to the pub to get out of the way.

It's quite crazy, that in my brother and sisters' village.. the pubs are generally still quite busy, thou no super pub chain as a placed there. While in my village, it seems that the pubs are dead, thou the social clubs are busy.

This is the token gesture we get in the UK, instead of a Bank Holiday.

England has one of the lowest number of Bank Hols in Europe, if not the world.

Pubs have basically killed themselves. I don't know a single person that goes out to the pub more than once a month and I grew up with a massive group that were in one almost every single night.

I can't see the point of opening an extra 2 hours, most will be deserted anyway.

Good for those looking to celebrate, but after paying £15 today for 2 pints in London today, I don't think I'll be out in the pubs often.

I was in the duke of wellington boozer on Thursday after work and its 8.50 a pint, who the hell is going to go and celebrate anything in there at those prices !!! I'd rather invite the friends over to my gaf, fire up the grill and crack open a few bottles of tanqueray No.10 while grilling up. Boozers are killing themselves. Geeser I work with went to see something at the O2 and he nearly had a coronary when they charged him close to a tenner for a pint of Camden Hells and that is basically **** water at 4.6% !!!!!!

I paid £8.50 for a 440ml can of whatever it was cheap cider in the O2 last night.

But yes, other than that odd special occasion I basically won't properly drink at a pub anymore unless it's a Spoons.

Although we did find one near London bridge yesterday that was £4 for a double whisky and coke. We also found this south African shop you could get 3 cans of whatever it was imported lager for £10, which wasn't bad, and drink it there.

So there are places you just got to look.

But yea if a pub wanted £8.50 a pint I simply just wouldn't go there.

How much alcohol duty is there on a pint ?

Is it the pubs that are charging sky high prices or is it the alcohol duty that making the prices so high ?

  • VAT: About £0.68.
  • Alcohol duty: About £0.46.
  • Business rates: Approximately £0.09.
  • Other taxes: Around £0.14, including corporation and employment tax.

Can confirm pub culture is fully alive in the valleys of West Yorkshire. Currently back visiting where I grew up and it's like nothing has changed in thirty years.

£3.90 for good bitter. Was £1 thirty years ago.

UK may have the lowest Bank Holidays but still has the most days off legally.

Where I live if an Bank Holiday falls on a weekend then it gets absorbed and we don't get that holiday back in the week.

For me 2027 is messed up as Christmas and Boxing day falls on the weekend :(

a good chunk of the UK gets bank holidays in lieu and your still expected to work them, bank holidays are just a gimmick in the UK

"In the UK, employers are not legally obligated to give employees bank holidays off, nor are they required to offer additional pay for working on them."

Wages/bills/brewery charges. The basic cost of the alcohol is almost irrelevant these days to the price they charge.

Yes.

It’s like a cpu that’s you pay £500 nobody is complaining because it’s only cost £150 to make. Well some do but not in the same way.

People look at alcohol in a very different light compared to everything else there happily pay for.

It’s almost like the cost of the drink itself is a relatively small factor in the price of a pint and instead pubs are having to raise prices because of rising staff costs, energy prices and other overheads.

This is a stupid idea by the government in any case, as a massive fan of pubs.
