Well, the time has come to start doing the build, so here we go. Owned the house for 8 years with the thoughts of always converting the double garage. However, the garage is under our living room of the same size (21ft x 18ft)... and the house is technically on 3 levels... so it's took some thought as we will be creating stairs coming down from the hallway archway down to the cinema room. Bear in mind, it's a cinema room BUT I don't want it clinical like a living room hence I won't be hiding speakers and things like this, it's literally converting a room into a nice place to be... i.e. you can just go and watch some general TV and it's not literally used for cinema purposes.

We've got a £10k budget for all the work and also all the parts of which I've pretty much got all the bits as follows:

  • Denon AVXR6400H 11.2 Amp that will be configured 7.1.4
  • Sony UBP-X800 4k UHD Player
  • Sony VPL-VW320ES (existing and will be moved to the cinema room)
  • Q Acoustics 3050 Front Pair, 3020 x 4 Side/Rear Surrounds, 3090C Centre Speaker, 3070S Sub and 4 x Cambridge Audio Minx12's for the Atmos speakers, replaced these with Q Acoustics QI65S which I'll dye the white covers to black, so I'll be selling the Cabridge Audios now.
  • QED Speaker Cable
  • Duronic 120" Fixed Screen
Various other blocks, wall blocks, fittings etc for fitting speakers into walls using banana plugs of which I'll detail as we go along, but these are the basics.

So, lets get the pre photos up and also, start showing some progress. Just to give indications of times, I started this around 7th September 2020 and the deadline for completion and then profesional calibration is 30th November 2020!

So, first thing was empty the whole garage, one 8 tonne building skip full later that was done... then was getting all the crap like empty boxes etc out of there... more work than I thought and taking things I wanted to keep upto storage.... so without further ado, lets get this thread started@

There is the layout of the house, it'll technically be 3 levels when this room is done...

BEFORE ANY CHANGES (but empty garage lol):

In the picture above, the 120" screen will be positioned in the middle of those windows.

The two garage doors pictured will be removed and replaced with french door patio doors.

Interesting, looks like a fairly modern build so insulation shouldn't be too tricky.

Is the garage at the side of the house or are you just far back from the road?

Hi matey, no it's under our living room, so the living room is above it, it's hard to explain but our house with this is 4 levels... this level, then hallway and kitchen, then living room then the upstairs bedrooms etc... House was built in 1984 believe it or not so no spring chicken :)

So, updates for work now. We had to work out how big the stage will be and to design it... so, we're going a two stage... errr... stage hahaha...

1). The main stage is rectangular as can be seen and this will house the 3 seater curved leather lovelyness, this will be around 7" above the main completed floor that you can see...

2). There will then be a "step" angled around this main rectangle so this won't be such a drop off... you can kinda see where this will be in the first and 2nd pictures that piece of wood on the floor that points towards the bottom right of the garage door...

So, below pictures depict where the rear chair will be and also, the main 7" stage will be... this will lead to the main stair case entry... where the silver level is on the floor will be a 2 seater recliner that will be surrounded by the small step stage from 2).

So nearly finished the first stage for the rear seats... need some more flooring tomorrow and to route the edges so it's smooth for carpetting later down the line... once this is done, I'll build the step down sections and then it's the stairs this week... can't wait now as it's coming together nicely...

So the extending of the garage doors started today... where they have to be raised to fit standard french doors and to also ensure that the tops match the end window top height, so here we go, brace yourself lol.

So, the lintel will be moving UP 3 courses up... this will mean I have on both of these gaps now at 2140mm wide x 2065mm high (the windows ordered are 2130mm x 2055mm)... hopefully they'll be here in the next 2 weeks.... so, all prep work to ensure holes all setup. Any bricks taken out will be to build a two course down the bottom as well which means any amendments won't be noticable because exactly the same bricks will be used (house was build 1984 so, woouldn't be able to match the bricks 100%), so reuse old bricks... great idea lol

Well, it's now raised and you can see the difference with the left nigh on finished compared to the right hand one that's yet to be done.

Now raised ready for the new French doors. you can see how much different it now is... so its gone up 3 courses of brick and now aligns with the side windows
