Pugs New Cinema Build (Double Garage Conversion)

Ok guys the day I've been waiting for... well one of the big milestones... plastering started... so this is where we got to today... was a late start from the plasterer but he worked hard and long and he's coming back tomorrow to do the ceiling... the quality seems spot on, it's so smooth... just what I need obviously....

What PJ you running for this build?
Hi matey, so I'll be running this lot... 120" Duronic 16:9 Projector Screen, Sony VPL-VW320ES 4K Projector, Denon AVXR6400H Amp 11.2, QAcoustics 3050 Front Standers, 3020 x4 Side/Rear Surrounds, 3090C Centre Speaker, 3070S Sub and QAcoustics QI65S x4 Atmos, Sony X800 4k Player, Toshiba EP30 HD-DVD, XBOneX,

Ok slight update, just to show where I'm going... so all ready and cleaned up for the carpet fitters tomorrow...

So as already said the cut out on the lower stage is for the two seater to slide into which will finish the "Millennium Falcon" stage off nicely even allowing small tables there if needed hahaha...

Plus we've chosen a name for the new cinema room but that will be unveiled nearer the completion.

So, plan is, carpet in 27/11/2020, spark is coming to connect all the final wiring etc... then paint ceiling and walls assuming they're 100% dry 28/11/2020 ... another coat 29/11/2020... get curtains up over all three doors.... and then move the hifi in.... probably from 1st December onwards...

Looks amazing, Superb amount of space in there also.
Just wondering why did you build that platform going off the bottom of the stairway? are you keeping the sofa on that?
Yeah so that 3 seater will go there and the 2 seater that I have (not in the picture obivously), will slide into the recess at the front... I wanted a two tier seating arrangement, so needed the rear stage higher. Will show up better once the carpets in tomorrow I think and the seater is in there on Sunday!

Ok so, sorry but been working 12 hours days at the minute, what with work then doing this cinema room... so, here goes...

Plastering was finiished Wednesday 25th, windows went in 26th and look fantastic... then Friday 27th carpets went in... well nearly went in... as they ran out of carpet and made a bit of a **** up on the measuring leaving me the front small stage and the whole of the stairs short... to say I was cheesed off is an understatement, so tomorrow they're ordering more carpet, however in the mean time, I need carpet ont he stairs so they're coming out to lay something temporary which when my carpet comes in they can replace, obviously free of charge as it's their mistake...

So, since then, I've had to paint all landing upstairs and do some other DIY int he house, then had to paint the ceiling and walls with their first coat etc and measure up doors...

So, this is where we'rte currently at... we're waiting for the spart to connect all lights and sockets now... and then 2nd coat of paint then it'll be fitting the banana plug wall sockets and start getting the stuff in... curtains, poles, speakers, hifit, measuring the height of the screen and all the good stuff... getting close now...

Excuse the poor photos but was in a rush when I took them and also poor light as well... however you get the idea...

No subs?!
Yeah as stated just a QAcoustics 3070S, however the plan is next year to go for 2x Monolith 12in THX 500-Watt Subwoofers which will be sweet as, however at the minute I had such a tight budget, and I got a deal... if I need more beef I can swicth for the yamaha in my living room... will see how it goes...

Ok so it's been a bad week, the boiler packed in and needed a new pump etc, then the electrical system to the emersion went **** up so... had a lot of problems which has slowed my progress... however... here we are. Ceiling is now complete, 2 layers of black, lights all in, speakers in and projector attached this evening...
Sunday could be a cheeky film if we get our skates on over next couple of days... walls need 2nd coat and cutting in... but nearly there for the basic finish for COP Sunday!

All that glazing must have been pricey, I wonder why you want so much natural light getting into a dedicated cinema room?

Very impressive work BTW, next year I'm considering a "buried shipping container" route ;)
Cheers man, yeah it's a lot of work... and I'm so tired but near the end of the major stuff... come tomorrow night, in theory speakers could be in and all electrics and painting complete... sliding doors up (well one, as the other one get delivered Monday)... so I'll be able to concentrate then... curtains and blinds up etc... and all of a sudden it'll look like a room lol

I'll be honest mate, as for the natural light... it's also got to fit with the front of the house, if I'd bricked those garage doors up it would've looked appalling from the exterior, and ultimatly I didn't want to spoil the asthetic of the house. Also, there'll be double thick curtains going up and next year bloc blinds going in as well. I wanted to be able to use that room in the day as well, kinda like when Olympics is on... Wimbledon and sporting event and be able to see my nice front gardens so although yeah t's a cinema room, it's not a cinema room if we really look at it,... I just want it to be a nice place to sit as well in the day with a brew :)

The actual franch doors are big, they're 2070mmx2040mm give or take and I got them both done by the guys who did my whole house 4 years ago... but think they absolutely make the room in the daytime... so it's one of those... If I was doing a 100% dedicated cinema room, I'd have been spending around 3k on insulations to get it 100% sound proofed and all sorts... and it'll be the black hole of calcuter in the day and that would've bugged me... at night when I'm watching films it'll be as black as black can be... I tend to not watch films in the day anyway as working all day so. By the time Summer comes... it'll be blacked out with specialist blinds... for the winter it don't matter as it's dark by 4:30pm anyway and where we live there is NO natural light, it's picth black outside.

As for your container route, that's mad because sure I seen a thread on that somewhere, can't remember if that was you or not? If not, I'll try and dig it out... seen it about a week or two ago.

Right, well today, was time to put the PJ Screen together and get it on the wall and have to say, what a great piece of kit. Had it assembled in an hour and up on the wall an hour later... had to be careful on the positioning due to the limit on my horizontal shift due to the PJ being basically slapped onto teh ceiling... so... setup not properly... literally got extensions all over the shop just to test of the cabling and all works thank god... even managed to knock up a Xmas tree for the cinema room at 2am last night...

So, tomorrow is: Finished painting, put speaker brackets on the walls and attach speakers, assemble my hifi rack, finish electrics, fix boiler, replace RCA box and fit all sockets to the walls, fit curtains and blinds... and in theory I could be sitting watching my first film tomorrow night! Sunday is gonna be one busy day!!!

Looks great but I have no idea how you could keep that ancient boiler. Guess your money is better spent on a cinema mind lol.
Exactly this, old boilers last tbh, I've gota combi boiler in other house and nothing but problem, 3 PCB boards in 10 years, pressure problems, absolute garbage... this just works and works and this si the first problem we've had with it in 8 years since moving in so... will be nicely tucked away soon... I'll wait until it goes before switching it out for a new one.

I think my issue would have been that its existence is ruining a nice square room. Id want it moved just to stop it annoying me .
Ahhh right yeah, well tbh there is no where for it, in the rest of the house, also, I've got plans for that corner of the room as well and it'll make a lovely base, trust me, when finished you'll see what I mean, don't get me wrong, if I'd have had more money I'd have contemplated it, however the house just doesn't have a place for it so it's to try and incorporate it into the place it's lived it life the best way... so even when replacing it in the future, it'll probably stay where it is, tucked away in it's cupboard lol

Fair enough. Hopefully it doesn't bother you when you're in the midst of a quiet tense movie moment and the pump and burner kick into action haha.
Hahaha, no it's silent when it's on, you just can't hear it, otherwise that would've been a major problem and it WOULD'VE been moved hahaha... nothing disturbs me and a film, other than the missus wittering on about can's of baked beans lol

The suspense is killing me! Did you get to watch your Sunday night movie?!

Looking great so far.
Hahaha, well I was up until 3:45am sorting the sound and wiring of the speakers, had a nightmare where two wouldn't work and took me 90 minutes to figure it out. Will be posting some pictures later of the latest state... but yeah it's up, running, sounds and looks fasntastic and that's without my usual tweaking and calibrations... still things to do after work so it'll be later tonight... however we'll all be down there tonight for Home Alone 4k... need to start my Xmas now...

OK, so, here's todays pictures with a neater room... and getting there now, managed to get all curtains up this evening and blinds for the small windows.... and TONIGHT is my first film in there, it's only Home Alone 4k, however need to somehow shoehorn myself into Xmas spirit now and feeling happier now it's nearly done...

I've got some day time piccies and nighttime with the curtains closed so you can appreciate the differences.

Yeah pretty happy now it's coming together. Just need carpet people to get the extra carpet and do my front stage and my stairs... fair few more surprises to come though so stay tuned ;-) And one mighty surprise which is awaiting shipping lol

Monoprice always seemed weird existence for us in the UK but now seems more robust distribution channels?

Looks good value those subs any reviews?
Yeah they do, it;'s a strange brand but get superb reviews and people on AVForums swear by them now... so they're certainly up near the top of my list especially for the money but that's for next year. For now, I'll have to make do with what I have, the missus won't be happy with any more spending for 2020 lol

However, if you have any recommendations for subs i the £500 space mate, please let me know as I'm open to suggetions when I upgrade.

Cheers fellas, much apprectiated... so, I think this is the list of things that need doing and it's still quite a bit, this isn't the end by any means:

  1. Carpets on the stairs and the front stage
  2. Fit and paint the sliding doors at the bottom of the stairwell
  3. Finish painting inside the stairwell ceiling and walls ready for the entry film memorbillia
  4. Paint and fit the louvre doors for the boiler and also the full length electric and gas front box to match the room
  5. Furnish with 5 cinema blankets (missus loves having a blanket while watching a film)
  6. Hang my Atmos/Denon and Sony aluminium plates on the walls and also fit some film memoribillia on the walls i.e. pictures etc
  7. The SECRET STUFF which I'm working on... to really make an entrance into the place... you will see this over the coming weeks/month
  8. Professional Calibrator to come in and optimise the PJ and the sound system (he's doing upstairs 75" TV as well)

Look forward to the secret stuff :D

With the pro calibration will you get before and after graphs?
Interested in audio calibration over using the receivers built in system.
yeah never had one before myself and all I've done is used the supplied mic and the Audessy setup, not had time to tweak and knowing I'll be needing acoustic panels anyway and anything to get rid of I'm expecting a lot of reccomendations which is fine, this is why I want him, to setup as best he can then tell me what I need to do to achieve the best sound for the room... can't wait to let him get his hands on the PJ as well!!!
