I have questions! and I feel you guys are best suited to answer them.

I'll try and keep this short, but I'm going back and forth as to which card is best suited for me currently or whether I should just wait for next gen.

Currently my 970 is performing better than I expected at 1440p, If I had no money there would be no issue, but I want a new shiny card to take advantage of my 165hz! I have G-Sync so need to stay green.

So...
1070 (or ti, I don't even know anymore)?
1080?
1080ti?

I want to make the most of my monitor running at 1440p 165hz (this doesn't need to be maxed out obviously) on as high a settings as I can get whilst i'm happy to turn down AA and make shadows softer etc, stuff that doesn't stand out as a visual downgrade from Ultra (basically ultra with a few things on high).

All of the above while future proofing myself for 2-3 years at this resolution

I'm at a loss! There's a MSI Gaming X 1080 for £480, is it worth it? Would a 1070 suffice for what I want? Tempted by a 1080ti but not if its going to get blown away in a few months by something close to the same price point as the card is currently. Which leads to.. sit tight and see what 2018 has to offer?

I appreciate any help! I'm not sure whats best suited for my needs (I play everything and anything) whilst maybe not going overkill if I don't need to!

Here's the thing, if Volta releases Q1 or Q2 next year then you might end up regretting a purchase. Conversely, if it releases Q3 or Q4 then you'll get plenty of use out of whatever it is you buy, if you do buy now.

If you're in need for something fresh then like above, a 1070ti is a solid option. And if you're not struggling with your current setup then wait it out. Although a 1070ti will give you good future proofing if you're happy to turn down some settings in the future.

I had 970s in SLI at 1440p nothing phased them really a 'just right' amount of overkill. They are slightly more powerful than a 1070 so I'd be looking around there as a great sweet spot especially if pricing is a factor/concern.

I only changed to a 1080 because I feel SLI support isn't what it used to be in newer titles and feel the VRAM squeeze is coming soon...

Thanks guys,

It appears as though I am getting a bit trigger happy. My card and cpu overclocked appear to be pulling in frames well above what benchmarks online say they should be doing. It seems sensible to wait and just build around next gen, next year.

I've never been in a situation before where I can buy a flagship card on launch (managed to turn my life around in the last 18 months) so I've never paid much attention to price above the mid-range. I know its very difficult to say, but if you guys were to base it off previous pricing structures, what sort of price bracket is a decent non-ref 1180 likely to launch at? Would it be comparable to the price of a 1080ti currently? I know its all guesswork currently, but any insight is helpful! :D

My guess is that the prices of the next range will be very similar to the prices for the current range. The reason why I think that is that I think that pricing has already increased to about the practical limit at each price point. Sure, there will be some people who would pay £1000 for the newest top of the range gaming card...but I think it wouldn't be enough people to be a practical market and I think that it's not likely to be practical to stretch the range to cover a wide enough spread to justify an additional even higher model, an xx90 Ti above the xx80 Ti, just to sell to that tiny market.

I'd like to think that the next generation of models would be cheaper than the currently rather expensive ones, but since manufacturers now know that they can sell cards at the current prices I think they will continue to do so. Why wouldn't they?

With the 1070ti just releasing i highly doubt nvidia is going to bring out volta, or whatever the next chip is gonna be codenamed, within the next 6 month. Not gonna happen i feel. They want to milk pascal completely and why wouldn't they as it makes sense business wise.

nVidia will not release consumer volta until all the cows have been milked and AMD release something that draws the attention of the cows.

2018 late or early 2019.

It's hard to know what to do at the moment. We are in no mans land!

These are unprecedented times where Nvidia have no pressure to refresh their current line up. Saying that I would be shocked if in 2018 they didn't release new cards. Either a 1000 refresh or the next gen.

Whether now is the right time to buy, who knows.

Probably if you are buying the clever man buys the 1070ti over the 1080. Although I'd check benchmarks first before jumping on it.

I bought a 1080 in August as an upgrade from a 970.

Well...I took a somewhat different solution the same problem....

My GTX 970 was struggling with 2560x1600 on my main monitor. I don't want to pay stupid money for this generation's GPUs.

Solution - Swap back to a 1920x1200 monitor for now. Nice performance upgrade :D

I believe this is the best option for you. Since you only upgrade every few years and you are reasonably happy with what you have now, there is no real need to upgrade at the moment. Especially when Nvidia are going to be releasing a new generation of cards next year.

I would say the 1180 model would be between £550 and £600 at launch. But, nobody really knows for sure.

Genius solution.
The only winner in this whole gpu game.

I Just pulled the trigger on a 1080ti, but i've been running a 280x and recently started a new job so have a bit of money to throw about

I made the 280 last 5 years so decided to reward myself, if i get half that out of the 1080ti it will be a decent investment!

If you only play at 1080p, you could keep that for 5 years+ for sure
