just pulled this out by accident but not sure where it came from it's attached to the cpu fan (to be honest never even noticed it until now)

It might help the situation a lil bit to know where the other cable is plugged into, im guessing it goes into the cpu fan header on the mobo ( you never know some people like to control the cpu fan speed themselves )

What kind of connection does that other piece of cabling have? a pic of that might help clear things up further ;)

Or it even looks like some kind of resistor/capacitor/electrical component kinda thing?

it plugs into cpu fan 1 wire comes out to the fan then this wire with the green thing on comes back out the fan.
but where it came from i have no idea LOL

Not 100% sure however that fan is quite old and old HSF usually have a diode of some kind that they shoved inbetween the sink to detect heat so that they can regulate fanspeed
whenever it gets too hot.

YEAH IT'S A SOCKET 939 MOBO THE WIRES NOT THAT LONG LOOKS LIKE U MIGHT BE RIGHT SHALL I SHOVE IT IN THE HEAT SINK GAP BETWEEN THE FINS

lol @ caps, well seems like we've solved the problem. But im seeing as its quite n old mobo that it doesnt have temp sensor info built in so that's why it has n old school thermistor to measure the temp of the fins/air!

Yer a quick google says it comes with a built in thermistor to control the fan speed, so just shove it between the fins where the most heat will be coming from and problem solved!
