Q.U.B.E - Quick Understanding of Block Extrusion

Ooo, theres a Demo. I aprove of this game. Demos are a lost art and in my mind, the single greatest weapon against piracy.

I will download this and give it a bosh. Looks great.

Just one thing though, I wish people would stop coming up with names for games, and then trying to fudge together some sort of long version of the abbreviation. 'QUBE' on its own is a perfectly good name for a game :D

It was actually quite the opposite, they actually were looking at the longer name at the beginning if memory serves me correct. I will try and get Dan to sign up on here and answer some of your questions if you like?

Tried the demo this morning and thought it was great, really lovely aesthetics. I'd like to see some kind of story but it still looks good. Only thin holding me back from buying is I'm not sure how long it is for that amount of money.

Took the gamble and bought it (didn't even notice the demo!).

I remember seeing a thread on here about it a while ago and thought it looked interesting, but I didn't dig deeper to see if it actually would be worth my time. I guess I'll find out in a minute when its finished downloading.

I just played the demo which was possibly the shortest demo I have ever played. I'm not overwhelmed to be honest; the only similarities it has with portal are the aesthetics and the fact that it's a puzzle game. But what made portal really enjoyable was Glados. Without Glados, portal would have been just another puzzle game with a cool gimmick. And that's what Qube seems to be. It's worse though because the solutions to puzzles are all insultingly obvious given that the movable blocks are all colour coded.

Tried the demo. Kinda seems like Portal if they removed the compelling story, the portal gun and just had fixed portals in every level.

I mean it looks nice and it's an interesting concept it's just a little bit shallow, they either spent far too much time/money on the visuals and forgot they were making a puzzle game or ran out of time/money before they could put the good stuff in. It's just too much like Portal for me to put up with it's flaws "because it's an indie game".

Yes, the direct similarity to Portal is really only visual but Portals visuals were DEFINING, every aspect of portals visuals were striking, as a result ripping it off makes people think of nothing else. IF QUBE was anything but a physics puzzler this wouldn't be a problem, unfortunatly because it IS a physics puzzler there is only one game that ever comes to mind whilst playing it which is Portal, sadly this means that 100% of the time we are practically forced to compare an indie developed physics puzzler to the single greatest physics puzzler and possible greatest game ever created by man.

I admit I did only play the Demo but if they put that little effort into trying to sell their game then I'm sorry but no, I won't be buying it.

Also I know this is slightly irrelevant point but I ****ing hate backronyms.

I'm not sure if it was an 'oversight'. Puzzles are really hard to create. They need a very logical mind to make them challenging but still enjoyable, and credit where it's due for indie developers, but however you cut it they are just two people. If neither of them has a mind that works like that then they're going to have a lot of trouble making a good puzzle game. I mean, could you write a crossword?

Valve on the other hand can stick a notice up in the window and find the perfect person for the job no problem.

No, I probably couldn't write a crossword, at least not to the standard of any published media, what you are saying is that if I therefore spent the next few years of my life making a book of crosswords and they turn out to be crap I should be praised because I was "just one man" and working against much greater competition. Sounds stupid no?

I'm sorry but if neither of them can design good puzzles then they have no business making a puzzle game.

I mean they are clearly talented, regardless of what I think it's an impressive feat for 2 people, it just seems like they could have done something far better had they not been so clearly interested in doing something "Portal-ish".

Oh of course, i'm not saying that it's a good game because of it. From what i've seen there's no chance of me getting it at that price. And we are just musing here, considering neither of us have completed the game...

I'm just saying that if it is the case that the puzzles aren't that good then it's probably not their 'fault', it's not like they did anything wrong or didn't put the effort in. It's likely that it's the sort of thing you couldn't catch until after the game's been released.

Fair enough, I think I'll stop now as I realise I'm being far too critical of a game I've spent a matter of minutes playing.

I quite enjoyed the demo but seem to be suffering serious screen tearing even with v sync on.

Has potential to be a good game, just wish the demo was longer/more involved before i go spending a tenner on it ..

So you play the demo which is essentially tutorial puzzles to introduce you to the game mechanics, and write the whole game off for being too easy?

It's obvious that it draws influence from Portal, but I think comparing them directly seems a little unfair... One made by a three man start up company, the other by one of the biggest most successful names in the business?

The thing is...does this really matter to the end user? Do games become better just because they were made by a smaller team?

You all know that Portal was the result of Valve buying up and employing a small indie team who made a little puzzle game called Narbacular Drop, right?

Yep. A demo is supposed to be representative of the full game, otherwise what's the point of releasing one? I get that early puzzles tend to be easier than later ones, but not that easy.
