OK, now I have read lots on the Q6600 pros and cons and decided to wait at least until the G0 became available - which they now have :D

I have a nice week 29B E6600 atm, and happily have it running @ 3.2GHz 24/7 on default volts and even with Speedstep et al switched on - really nice clocker in that sense, in that it is capable when needed but scales back a treat too :)

So - to the question ! The only time I really see me system pushed is with HD video encoding. I have a Panasonic SD1 camcorder which records to AVCHD and although playback is always fine, editing and encoding/transcoding can really put a toll on things.......so, simple enough question - do you guys think that a Q6600 will improve my lot ?

A lot depends on what software you are using to do your encoding.

if it's multithreaded i.e. can use more than one core then the answer to your question is yes, you will notice a big diff. if it's not multithreaded you won't

Ah-hah....good point.....well, Nero 7 was my program of choice (as for some time it was the only thing that managed to deal with AVCHD in any sensible fashion :() but I now Have Pinnacle Studio 11 Ultimate......would like to think that this is multi-threaded......any ideas ? Easy way to tell

yeah me too... but i am ordering one tomorrow anyway... (the temptation got me... then shuck me around !!!)

I use a lot of Multi Task apps so worth it to me, i just say go for it if you have the money spare. more FUN clocking a new chip. :D

Is it worth going from a b3 at 3.6 to a g0 stepping ? thinking i may hit 3.8/4ghz.

If you can shift your B3 chip quickly and get a G0 for around 20 quid then I would go for it.

Soon no one will want B3's its old tech :p :D

Hot and power hungry  :D

Absolutely no, my god, 3.6GHZ not fast enough for you?

Your not gurranteed to hit 3.8GHZ with a G0 stepping.

I cannot belive anyone would even be thinking that.

Kinda convinced now guys.....now just need to think of whether to change my mobo too...I hear the P35 boards are the dish of choice for Quads ??

why not?

Its not like it will cost him much.

And he will have lower temps and more chance to scale his cpu.

This is enthusiast and your last comment stinks TBH.

For a start no one can be certain it will hit 3.6GHZ let alone higher all though you seem to think that this G0 stepping is like out of this world.

dC2006 is the Quad at 3.6GHZ not fast enough for you?

Your probally find you wont notice a diffrence at all, very minimal if their is one. Certainly not worth the hassel.

No way am I selling my B3 now.

I've had it for 4 months now and it'll do me fine til Penryn.

Your missing the point again.

Its not wether 3.6ghz is fast enough.

Its a hobby and interest.

The chance of tryng a new chip.

Really don't see what the hassle is TBH?

Sheesh

the hassle of selling the b3 and buying the g0 wont be worth the tiny amount of extra speed, ridiculous to waste time/money changing 1 cpu to the same one but a different stepping IMO.
