Q6600 G0 - Now that this is available.....is it for me ?

the hassle of selling the b3 and buying the g0 wont be worth the tiny amount of extra speed, ridiculous to change 1 cpu to the same one but a different stepping IMO.

People do it all the time.

This is not a new Phenomenon

People did it with the Opterons, X2's the quads are no different.

Is it worth going from a b3 at 3.6 to a g0 stepping ? thinking i may hit 3.8/4ghz.

There are no guarantees that a G0 will reach 3.6 let alone 3.8/4ghz. Some have struggled to get past 3.2. They seem to be averaging 3.6. If you are an avid benchmarker and don't mind taking the risk then go for it but in all honesty, benchmarks are the only thing that will show any difference and 200mhz won't show any viable difference in day to day tasks imo so for most, the risk in getting a slower chip is simply not worth it especially as you already have a very good quad. Lower temps make no difference in CPU performance once its maximum clockspeed has been attained so a b3 running 3.6 @ 60c will be the same as a g0 chip running 3.6 @ 50c, both well within spec and both perfoming exactly the same.

The B3 quads are hardly old hat, if you have a good one keep it, enjoy it and don't fall for the G0 hype. The hype is driving down B3 quad prices so there will be a few bargains to be had but the difference between the two is being blown all out of proportion imo, much the same as someone selling an e6600 to get an e6850 - a pointless upgrade imo unless benchmarking is your game.

The new revisions are without doubt a great improvment and a fantastic price now but to 'upgrade' from an already excellent clocker is a hell of a risk.

Having said all that I would probably risk it :D

If you have a core 2 duo i see no reason other than fun to upgrade until penryn.
By the time games run better on quad and lets face it most of us just want to be able to max games out,
the q6600 will be outdated and surpassed by penryn and a lot cheaper.
Until theres a killer game that requires me to update my processor
to max it out which is unlikely for a long time barring sup comm of course
not to mention graphics card being of greater importance i shall stick with what i have and suggest you do the same unless you play sup comm everyday.
I went upgrade mad for a while changed duo changed ram changed gpu
it hasn't made me happier i still want more but i don't suppose i need it.

So, to make some sense of the thread so far.....the advice is that HD video encoding will show an improvement in all likelihood......?

Any thoughts on my current mobo (see sig) - tempted for a P35 chipset as they apparently like Quads......thinking maybe the Asus Blitz....... :D

It's a simple question if you look at it this way, do you 'need' a quad or do you 'want' a quad?

Understanding the difference between 'needs' and 'wants' is a tough nut to crack! ;) :D

Thoughts? Yeah its crap for quads and little better for C2D. - sorry to be so blunt ;)

Get a p35.

Ye...and if you dont get a quad now after all this thinkin....you are just going to be hacked off...and end up getting one in a couple of months....so just buy it now.

P35 board...gigabyte DS3 or soemthing...good overclcoking board and quite cheap.

Sold !
Now for whether to get an ASUS Blitz to pair it with......

The ASUS Blitz is so overpriced for what it is. Just like the Striker.

Your paying for the name, the stupid little LCD gimmick, waste of money, theirs cheaper boards that do the job just as well.

Go for the Abit P35 Pro.

Hhhmm, not really an ABit guy.......but will read up on this board...other options/experiences ?

What do you mean your not an Abit guy, for god sake man, does it really matter what company it comes from? :p :D

What is with this, lets only go for a certain manufacturer?

BLITZ! BLITZ! BLITZ!!

It rocks :)

DeadMan

Just not had much joy with ABit boards over the years, and always doen well with ASUS.....like a comfy pair of slippers (not !) ;)

Methinks the Blitz is looking like my board of choice atm....save a last minute change of heart.....c card getting close to leaving wallet now....

I can only get 2.79ghz on my E6600 with 1.47V through it.

Won't get to 3ghz without a lot of effort.

Worth going for the G0 Q6600? And sticking it to 3ghz? (if it goes that far!)?

I use a lot of multithreaded programs.

:( That has to be one of the most stubborn E6600's out there, surely ?! Unlucky........I take it you are happy it is not the mobo restricting the OC ?

I had an ASUS P5 WH and it was the same :( I have the Gigabyte P35 DS4 and thats the same, so it has to be the CPU, typical!

I didnt really look too much into stepping codes when I bought it though!

I'll order my Q6600 G0 tonight, hopefully OCuk will give me a good stepping lol

Well I now have a G0 Q6600 en route and will plug it into my P5WDH in the first instance.....(little bit of testing and no need to reinstall Vista  yet).....

Also have a ASUS Blitz Formula in the same shipment, ready for when the P5WDH disappoints ;)
