Q6600 Kentsfield + DDR3 RAM ?

Yea I know, but somebody told me

(I'm aware that the memory controller is built into some of the latest CPU's for DDR3 and so I wasn't 100% sure that this CPU supports it)

The q6600 being an s775 chip doesnt have the memory controller on the cpu, intels latest i5/17 series do though. There are some s775 motherboards that do use ddr3 though.
 
Sorry, another question:

I'm guessing that if his CPU is 65nm + 1066 FSB, then this motherboard spec is incompatible:
- Supports 45nm Intel Core 2 multi-core processors with FSB 1333 MHz

No. The motherboard will be compatible. Those mobo specs just tells you the maximum rated values of latest versions of cpus and rams etc that it can support. I have E6600 which is also 65nm and I am running it on Gigabyte EP45 UD3LR mobo which supports 45nm multi core cpus.

It's always best to check manufacturer website for the relevant mobo and associated cpus that it can support;).
 
Even some P35 boards support DDR3 like asus P5kC and Gigabytes P35C. But I have seen some benchmarks with DDR2 and DDR3, there is very little advantage with a Q6600 for DDR3.
 
Gigabyte do some nice P43 and P45 DDR3 boards with USB 3.0 which would be worth having. Quite a few external Hdd caddies using USB 3.0 now.
