Q6600 Overclocking Help

Thats a very nice VID. You can easily hit 3.4GHz with a good Intel P45 chipset mobo. The P5W DH Deluxe afaik is an ancient mobo now that was released back in 2006. If resetting cmos fails then it is most probably your mobo holding you back from overclocking Q6600.

Just reset cmos and set those settings and it's booted. gonna check coretemp and cpuz now.

VID is 1.25v.

Temps now (just after startup are between 23 - 30 celcius)

CPU-z is saying running at 3ghz which is great news.

Thanks for helping me sort it.

I do want to ask, when moving the jumper to reset cmos, do I really needto remove the battery like the mobo manual says? if so then fair enough but if not then it'll be helpful as i have to remove my gpu to be able to access it!

To my knowledge, moving the jumper is just a method of resetting CMOS, you are told to remove the battery IF moving the jumper didnt work.
In your case, I believe you wouldnt have to remove the battery.

I am glad I have been of some help:). Resetting Cmos involves either moving the jumper or taking out the Cmos battery for few minutes while your PC powersupply is disconnected. But it always helps to do both just to be 100% sure:).

Guys, would overclocking my q6600 to 3ghz significantly shorten my cpu life?

There was a thread about such issue some weeks ago and somebody mentioned that whether running a cpu at stock speed or overclocked speed, the performance degrades overtime. However cpus can run for many years as they are deemed to be the strongest pc component without any problem. Even the performance degradation shouldn't be a lot.:)

Edit: I am running my [email protected]

Cheers, Ill definitely consider it during these next few days.

Did you use 334 x 9 ? or 333 x 9?

He used 334 x 9 just as I did.

334 x 9 = 3006MHz = 3Ghz (Solid 3.0GHz)

333 x 9 =2997MHz = 3Ghz. (dubious 3.0GHz lol:p)

I have noticed many times when people use 333 x 9, in the cpu-z it is showing mainly as 2997Ghz and they are calling it 3Ghz. Best to use 334 Mhz:).

I did actually use 333 after resetting cmos last night but have changed it to 334 this morning before booting.

CPU-Z is stating i'm at 3009.8Mhz. When i was at 333 cpu-z said 3002.?Mhz

Odd eh!

Thanks

Neil

oh sorry, that screendump doesn't show the ram, i'll check now and update post in a min

Just checked the cpu-z validator site andjust noticed it does say ram speed on left side.

Sorry for the confusion:

RAM : 4096 MB DDR2 Dual Channel
RAM Speed : 334.4 MHz (1:1) @ 5-6-6-18
Slot 1 : 2048MB (6400)
Slot 1 Manufacturer : OCZ
Slot 2 : 2048MB (6400)
Slot 2 Manufacturer : OCZ

I see you chose the first ram divider with a ratio of 1:1, so it is running at DDR2 668MHz (334 x 2). So you are running the ram at underclocked speed. I think you can choose the 2nd ram divider which should give you 801Mhz as discussed before.

Edit: use cpu-z and go to memory tab and take screenshot. It will be more clearer.

right, i'm on my netbook posting this as my desktop is sat in the bios screens. For RAM i get options for:

501
668
835
891
1002
1113
1336

The multiplier is still locked at 9

Why isn;t it giving me 801 like you said?

Also, a bit off topic but bios related:

When i boot my system, I get a message saying Detect Drives Done, no drives found.

Why does it say this?, i have my os drive in sata 0, storage in sata 1 and optical drive in sata2

on main bios page, it says:

Primary ide master: not detected
primary ide slave: not detected
third ide master: wd150gb
third ide slave: wd500gb
fourth ide master: not detected
fourth ide slave: optical drive

Any ideas about this?

Thanks

Neil

I think your FSB Strap to NorthBridge is currently set to Auto so you are getting all the different ram dividers for different FSB straps. Even then it should give you 801Mhz value. It is strange:confused:. Have a check again. Set FSB strap to northbridge to 333MHz instead of auto and see if you get 801MHz.

I wouldn't know about this mate.

ok, thanks about the hard drives, i'll post elsewhere to ask.

I can't seem to find that fsb strap to northbridge anywhere. Will it be under a different name?, I can't find anything that could be it either?
