q6600 to break 4ghz?

well i can go 4ghz easy with 2 gig sticks but with 4 is not stable and temps are low so i stuck with 3.6 @ the moment

My Q6600 will boot windows at 3.8 (never tried higher) but errors in prime within seconds, never tried a 3dMark but its tempting.

ok up to 3.2ghz but failing prime 95 first two threads stopped so i upped the voltage by 2 increments in my bios and then the first one stopped so i have upped it to 3.85 and hopefully i can get a stable oc at 3.2 without having to break 1.4v

just tried to get to 3.6 with 4 gig of ram and raised the cpu voltage all the way up to 1.48 but daredent go further to back to 3.2 ghz and ill try break 4 another time with 2 gig of ram

The golden 4ghz is very hard to achieve. Even mediocre Quads will do 3.6 but start running out of steam around 3.8. You need decent cooling and a decent rig but most of all persitance and patience to get to 4ghz STABLE but it is possible...

Suicide benches are for wimps imo:D

w3bbo I like your sidebar, is that only available with everest ultimate ??? and where did you get all those other readings ??

That is really handy to have.

Nice W3bbo, whats your system specs?

Yeah it's everest ultimate configured to what I like. Some boards don't have all the readings, it all depends on what sensors your board has.

What cooling you using fella? I'm thinnking of doing an hour or so, of overclcoking, currently at the following:

Very very poor performance of the western digital, I'd have thought the Maxtor would've been the weakest, quite surprising that!

I'm at around 40-42C idle in windows at 1.488v and 3.2GHZ on air... when running Prime95 on all four cores going to 63C under load... do you think I have much left? I can run 3.3ghz, but isn't stable, can get a 3dmark06 out of it, but not a lot else, starts throwing wobbly... what's a safe ish voltage to throw at her?

I know 4ghz instead of 3ghz will make next to no difference in games...

I was wondering what apps you guys are using where 4ghz will make a difference.

Big statement "knowing" that Mike. I have to disagree though, a res of 1920 or above with a top end GFX card will make all the difference at high detail with some games. Video editing/rendering, will ,make all the difference, it's inevitable progress.
Plus all the scientific apps like Seti, F at H etc.

Says he who didn't have the guts (or skill?) to bench!

Please, prove me wrong. :p

Takes more skill to get an high overclock stable than to ram as many volts as you can through a cherry picked cpu on extreme cooling and let it run for 8secs before the BSOD. Stress a CPU for 8 hours rather than a piddly sub 10 second prime run that has no real world benifit, then I'll be impressed.

I used to bench as well you know, but the 'big boys' sort of took the fun out of it for me as pouring LN2 into pots is hardly indicative of a 24/7 pc. This, for me at least, is going against the true nature of overclocking i.e 'upgrading your components for free'. If ya can't use it under normal conditions then whats the point - unless of course you are trying to substitute a benchmark for another department in which you are lacking? ;)

Ahh, I forgot about folding, I guess 4GHz would help there...

For gaming tho, I would have thought 3Hhz would be more than enough for anything really, remember that's like having 4 x p4's running at 6GHz as C2Q's do more per clock per clock. I always thought speeds 3GHz+ only really made a difference with benchmarks tbh. Still, if you already have the gear to run 4GHz, I don't see any reason not to go for 4GHz really (I just don't really see the point spending the extra £££'s in order to achieve a very slight or even no improvement personally).

True. :)

Yes, yes I am. :p

I know what you mean though.

Weescott knows it's only a bit of banter m8;). Athough I am glad he is admitting to his shortcomings:D
