q6600 versions and vid

thanks for all the input guys, unfortunately i cant test my new quad until i get my new mobo, im upgrading from a 680i to 780i from evga, i enjoyed clocking my e6600, ran 24/7 @3.6ghz voltage of i.525 set in bios, could have done the pencil mod, but was a bit scared to do so, most i done was thermal paste replacement on the nb/sb chipsets and mosfets.

Well the lower the voltage needed to run at 2.4ghz, then in theory the better the chip may overclock.

But it's not always the case.

as far as i can tell, some motherboards just read 1.325v or some other value.

i have never found an ip35/-e board w/q6600 that doesnt say 1.3250 VID.

All the CPUs are different. They are banded when they are tested at the factory. A low VID doesn't say anything about how it will overclock, it just says all the cores passed the factory tests at a low VID. I've had 1.25V and 1.325V Q6600 G0's and they all need 1.5V or more for 3.6GHz stable. It's only an issue if you're worried about cooling. I'm running a totally passive system here with two X1950Pro's and an E8400 at 4GHz. The CPU cores are sitting quite happily at 72C. Most users would be having heart atacks with temperatures like that, but it still has 23C to go to hit the throttle point.
