Hey im looking to buy a q6600 but im not sure what all the different version are..

What advantage does this g0 stepping over a energy efficient one.. or are they the same thing??

Im confused..
I've tried searching the forums but theres soo many topics on the q6600 so its hard to find!

Thanks

Cheers mate that certainly clears it up...

Next question would be...

im running a 2.4 ghz amd dual core, 2 gig ram, abit an8 board...939 pin

If i upgraded to that processor 2 gig 1066mhz and a Asus P5E Intel X38
(keeping my hd2900xt)... would it be worth the £380?

case is fine... (cosmos) power supply is 800watt gigabyte.

Put simply, you could easily overclock it to 3.6GHz with a £15 Arctic Freezer 7. Even at its stock speed of 2.4GHz it would absolutely destroy your existing setup.

Here's mine on my Asus Striker Extreme but the board you are looking at is a much better overclocker :)

You want low latencies but since Intels aren't all that sensitive to latency you can let it RAM higher than PC2-6400 is for overclocking low multi CPUs to the extreme

FSB and Ram speed runs best in 1:1 ratio. Most Core 2 Duo/ Quads currently have around 266mhz FSB (266x4). 6400 memory in DDR2 is 800mhz (400x2), but thats 'double rate' so it is actually 400mhz.

This means, 6400 memory will allow an overclock of the CPU to around 3.6ghz (400mhz FSB x 9 multiplier) without even overclocking the RAM speed, which is what most Quads/C2D peak at anyway. The higher speed ram is useful for when you want to hit a higher overclock AND want tighter timings. However, the Intel chip based systems don't see too much benefit with tighter timings in real-world performance, so people tend to stick with 6400 rated ram.

No PC8500 is not worth it unless you're running a 475mhz+ FSB. And even then, good clocking PC6400
will keep up.

As an alternative to 1066 memory:

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC)

This Week Only Offer
was £31.99 ex vat
£24.99
£29.36 inc VAT

So if you decide you want to use 64bit os such as vista 64 then 4x1 would be £58.72 Inc Vat

Asus P5E Intel X38 is a good over clocking mother board;)

Getting to 3.6 is not exactly easy. It depends entirely on the chip you get. To get to 3.6 I need to up my Vcore to over 1.5 in bios, and my temps are awful with a Tuniq.

So I think it is more accurate to say, there is POTENTIAL to reach 3.6 with a good board and cooling, but theres no gaurantee.

Just on this forum there are regular OC's of 3.6GHZ mate. Was it really that hard to put your VCore up to 1.5 :D

Seriously, I agree. There is NO guarantee that every CPU will clock the same but buying the G0 (SLACR) stepping does increase the likelihood.;)

Sadly, mine is a G0.... was really hoping to run it at 3.6GHz. Its very comfortable at 3.2, but just doesn't want to run higher without LOADS of extra juice.

Post your settings and I'll sort it...I used to be the tech manager at OcUK and chief overclocking psycho :)

what kit u running it in? Just seen your sig and the only wall u may be hitting is with the 4Gb RAM.

*Edit*

Also, be aware of the dreaded VDroop..... Although my CPUz screenie says 1.424V its actually 1.525 in BIOS.

Would 4GB impact OC potential of the CPU?

I know its not an FSB wall, as I can run happily at 400FSB with 8X multiplier. Actually have run happily as high as 450 FSB, with the mem at 900.

Yes 4x1 will have an impact. The 4x1 will add more strain to the north bridge (memory controller) vs 2x1. An increase in NB voltage is required for higher over clocks and stability. (and a bump in FSB, PLL voltage may also be required)

I found the NB voltage very important but I'm running the Striker extreme (680 SLi) which is a notoriously fiddly and difficult board to overclock. My NB is running at 1.55V.

4GB Ram is using both banks of the memory controller (Northbridge) = more work for it to do = more Voltage required :)

What's very important is to turn off all the crap you don't need such as:

C1/ Vanderpool
Speedstep
Execute Disable Bit
ALL references to spread spectrum etc

The CPU shouldn't need much more than 1.5V to hit 3.6GHZ so if its still flaky with that much voltage, start fiddling with the chipset/NB voltages.

What might be worth trying to satisfy your sanity is overclocking it with just 2GB RAM to start with.

I found mine worked well with a 450FSB and 8 Multiplier.:)

Might give that a go this weekend. Though if it allows higher stable clocks, its just going to mean spending more money getting 2 2GB sticks :(

I just couldn't go back to 2GB. My machine is running beautifully as it currently is, even if my OC isn't as high as some.

Have been times when have had one game open such as UT3, forgotten I had it minimised and loaded up COD4, and machine just plodded along without any issues.

Have to say, its first time in a while have had a system which I think will comfortably see me through a few years without showing too much age.

thanks guys.. im convinced that this would be a good move now..

The next question is.. which cpu cooler.. stock? or aftermarket.. needs to fit in the Cosmos.. and be quiet!

Im thinking the thermaltake ultra 120 extreme.. would adding a fan help?

edit.. im going to leave this upgrade mid january.. is this going to be ok? price isnt likely to go up are they?

Thanks

yeh i would use watercooling but that takes the system way out of budget... I still think im going to go for the thermaltake it looks better in the reviews.. unless any one has a reason why the tuniq tower is better?

Thanks

ive got the q6600 @ stock for the moment cause i havent had the time to oc and having a little problem with the bios not letting me change anything :? think its to do with asus suite
anyways to the point i only have 2 gb patriot 1066 ram and i often run football manager and cod 4 sometimes even left supreme commander open as ive played on cod 4 havent noticed a difference
so if you did go back down to 2 gb i dont think it would be a huge difference and maybe the oc would offset it
