q6600 versions

You will not find better than an Ultra-120 but beware that some of the bases of these heatsinks are not always the best and may require lapping.. tbh I am now in the proccess of my 4th build in the last 2 months and all 4 have had one of these heatsinks and all 4 of them have been fine (although I have lap'd two for extra performance)

Tbh though they are easy to install, and make you you get a quality HIGH RPM fan for it.. you can always run it slower and that extra ommph will give you much better performance these heatsinks are all about airflow

Sorry to kind of hijack the thread a bit but looking for some words of wisdom from andy the tech man!

Got my kit running @ 3.7ghz, specs below. My motherboard runs 450sb fine (ran this on a 7x multi prior to getting my Q6600, as theoretically I wanted to know if, given the right cooling etc, I could hit 4ghz). But if I run my q6600 @ 430fsb with a 9x multi it just poops out in orthos, the whole pc freezes and resets  I have tried voltages all the way up to 1.6v in the bios and still cant get it to run 3.8ghz in orthos for more than 10 seconds without this problem.

Confused as it runs a nice 450fsb, but as soon as a big clockspeed is applied and a 9x multi it becomes a problem. Do larger multis need a bigger northbridge voltage?

Maybe at my motherboards max? :(

EDIT: also forgot to say, im under some nice water, so temps arent an issue at all

thats scary... im trying to run silent so i dont think my overclocking will be as extreme.. if i overclock at all. to be honest i can run most games HIGH atm.. so with the ummphh of 2 more cores it should be enough to see me through to the next 2 years (he hopes)

well @ idle the system is not noticable louder than the g/f machine which has Sharkloon Silent Eagle fans in... and it can pretty much go along at 1000RPM fan speed even when playing something like Crysis or Supreme Commander.. only the Prime95 runs where everything is being used @ 100% do the fans need to kick in... and am pretty certin if I ran it @ stock the fans would never come on :) got a screen shot of the stock load temps at the end of the log :) best thing of the whole night they were lol

Try your RAM in the other two slots.

Try higher than 450 too!

Its the high FSB speed that strains the north bridge, not the multi. You may have whats known as a FSB "Hole" at 430MHz which is a dead spot at which the mobo won't run stably. On my striker extreme it happens at 400MHz (1600) with certain BIOSes. Its running at 3.6GHz (450 X 9 Multi) with no probs at all:)

I'd stick with the 450 if I were you because a higher FSB blows open the memory bandwith:D

Ok, I'll give it all a go, thanks for the help!

ps. do you mean 450x8? :p

You'll be needing one of these then: :D
