I've been giving a lot of thought lately to cloud backup solutions. One thing that struck me is that QNAP have a remote replication feature. Essentially you can back up your qnap to another qnap machine located at say, your parents.

Does anyone do this or have experience of it and how do/did you find it?

I don't really use that feature much but I did set it up for a friend's business but other than it works I can't really comment much on it (someone else has taken over the day to day support of it).

I use the ability to realtime replicate to an external USB drive and that works pretty well aside from taking a fair bit of time to do maintenance (30-40 minutes) after certain events i.e. unexpected power failure. (This give me greater flexibility in terms of grabbing my data quickly if needed and/or should the entire internal array fail as it is just a standard NTFS format drive that is synced with the internal RAID).

Thanks. So setting it up and initial impressions are positive?

My reason for going down this route is to have the offsite backup with little intervention from myself. Thinking I could get away with a low end 1 bay model located at my parents house.

Everything is already backed up to the nas and my pc is setup with onedrive as the default save for pretty much everything. Alternatively I could go with something like google drive for $2 a month and set the nas to sync to that?

It has been awhile so I don't really remember - IIRC it was pretty straightforward - enable RSync server on the "remote" NAS (making sure it can be seen through the internet or VPN) and then setup the "local" one to do a NAS to NAS task with those details.

EDIT: Not played with the RTRR feature though - only nightly backups with RSync.

Online cloud storage has the advantage of usually being available on almost any device anywhere - which while possible with the QNAP NAS (as an additional service) takes a lot more setting up.

For reasons I cant explain I dont like backblaze. Purchased a 100gb plan for google drive and qnap have an app that does folder to folder synchronisation. Happy days
