Just curious. The q6600 is clocked at 2.4ghz. Now im assuming that i per core? And if so, does overclcoking the processor to say 3.4ghz increase the clockspeed of each core by 1ghz thus having an effective speed 13.6ghz?

Sorry if that is a really stupid question.

Thanks

The effectiveness is not clockspeed x cores. The quad is running at 2.4ghz th cores are just extra cores to be using to process more data at once. think of it like ram. 1gb of 800mhz ram runs the same speed as 2gb of 800mhz ram.

not a very good example to compare with tbh. but it gets the point across i guess.

Think of having more cores as like having more kettles -

You can boil more water faster, but you can't make a single cup any faster than you would normally.

Iam going to have to nick that iam afread, explains dual cores ect nicely to non computery people.

Unless you are boiling the amount of a single kettle in all four kettles - basically if you have a 2 litre kettle, if you divide that up between 4 (of the same) kettles, then it will boil faster - less water takes less time to boil.

My friends are having a little bit of a debate.. Are quad-cores actualy useful? I think one of them was saying something about how 2 of the cores are useless etc and it is only worth going for a Core 2 Duo.

quad is usefull in some aspects of computer work IE: C,A,D other such types but for the general user quad core cpu's dont really bring you a whole lot of benefit, well at the minutes atleast.

They are not useless. It depends purely on the software you are using. The most benefit of a quad can be seen in things like video editing, encoding, stuff like that.

Games are slowly coming on board with the multiple core side, but not enough to warrant the purchase of a quad if you only game.

If you are a gamer, the support for dual cores has improved a fair bit, making it the best option.

Isn't supreme comander impossible to pay with everything max on a dual core due to all the physics going on in the game?

lol what happened to your long awaited "november" build?

It just got ordered thast what :P

I was going to build in september till i heard about the 9800 coming out in november.. which turned out to be a GTS coming out in december haha :)

Now im ordering everyhthing and a crappy graphics card to tide me over till the GTS release. Should be hear tomorrow. That was very random also.
