Quad-core price cuts?

Hey guys as i got myself a job at pc *****(dont boo!!) over christmas i finally have some money to build a new pc in january. My brother is buying me a case and giving me his old x1800 XL, my dad is getting me a PSU and my m8 is getting me a dvd-rw haha!
So i am left with the HD, CPU, MOBO and RAM.
As i am building in Jan my main question is how much do you think the cheapest quad-core CPU will be (amd or intel)? Do you know when any price cuts will come into play? For example i wont mind waiting untill february to build.
Im looking into getting a seagate 7200.10/11 HD and 2gb of pc2-6400.
I am unsure of the motherboard but i want one with a 1333fsb if its intel so i can use the newer intel CPU's although i know some use 1600fsb. By february do you think AMD will be priced more reasonably? Could i get a quad-core for £120-130?

Cheers all :D

While its possible there will be a pricecut on existing Quads, I suspect that the current quads will simply be made end of line, when intel introduce the Penryn based quads.

List price for a Penryn 2.66 Quad will probably be pretty close to the current RRP for Kentsfield 2.4's. Depending on how good a deal the suppliers get, and if there is shortage or sufficient to meet demand.

Its like when intel released the E6x50 processors on 1333fsb. They are considerably cheaper than the E6x00's which they replaced, but the E6x00's went end of line, so there were was very little in the way of price cuts on the older parts. They simply sold out and were not replaced etc.

I believe Penryn quads have been postponed to march 2008, so I guess there is some chance they will sneak in a price drop before then, but I wouldnt count on it.

Better of waiting and picking up a q6600 second hand when they all sell them to get penryn quads.
Is correct when hardware gets surpassed these days there is no price cuts they just tend to keep things at the same price.
So if a q6600 is £160 when the penryn equivilent arrives it will remain around that price whether people are buying it or not.
I guess retailers must be able to return goods on a no sale return ?

I imagine it'll be quite easy to find an AMD Phenom for around £120-£130 soon enough, once we actually see the price cuts... You can already pick them up under £140 so it's not that far off. :)

Cheers guys. Yeah its a shame they tend to make older processors end of the line. The new penryn 9300 will be about the same price as the Q6600 right? Hasnt it got less L2 cache IIRC? Would it be any faster?

if i get a good offer, im willing to sell my q6600 G0 (the cooler, energy efficient version) quite cheap when Q9450 comes out.

watch closely at AMD's quad cores, when they come out, i expect the q6600 will take a dive

I think that we shall soon be seeing another cpu price war with quads. i wouldnt be too suprised if you could pick up an amd or intel quad maybe slightly cut down for around £100 in 2 months time.

Not a bad price at all. However, you'll have to think very carefully as to whether that £20 saved buying a Phenom is worthwhile when ultimately it's 200MHz slower than a Q6600, is slower clock for clock and at this point of time is yet to be seen overclocked to speeds past ~2.75GHz stable.

If you're buying next month, I suspect your money is best spent on an Intel P35 based Motherboard and a Quad Q6600.

Yeah good point. Im going to wait till Jan/Feb sometime and see if i can either get a phenom for £100 or a Q6600 for £130

Don't bank on it. Rumours persist that Intel will put a price premium on the new Penryns as they have little competition from AMD and want to recoup some of the revenue they've lost from price cuts over the past year or two.

I agree 100%, there's just no point in getting a Phenom rig currently because a Q6600 is just so much better, lets hope that AMD can improve things with the next revision though.

The moment you said PC **** I began to hate you! But then again even if you are a PC **** employee which I find them to be a bunch of goons who overprice silly little things and deteste those evil people who call themselves tech guys... how could they be called that when they don't even know the basics? Had to use them a couple of months ago to test my CPU which cost me £20 which I found ridiculous because they didn't even test it! Tell you one thing and they do another but still made there lazy asses do something and test the graphics chip :)

Anway I was also thinking getting the Q6600 nice price OcUK got on at the moment with Weekly Offer but my E6600 is doing well as 3.4GhZ :) Waiting for new year and Graphics Cards to drop in price and Vista Service Pack :)
