QUAD or C2D

Thing is, nobody has mentioned the fact that by the time 4 cores are fully used in games then we will probably have frequencies of 1ghz more, more than likely.
This is the reason i've just upgraded to the E6850 and not the Q6600, by the time 4 cores are really needed for games and applications there will be cheaper, faster, cooler and more energy efficient quad core cpu's available, i'm thinking twelve to eighteen months, the other piont is that not everyone on these forums overclocks there system so the faster 1333FSB of the E6850 should be an advantage in terms of clock speed and memory bandwidth.

There was some post about an american doing 4ghz on a Q6600 Go. I find this a bit sceptical .But if true, all you E6850 are gona have to eat your words :P

Plus whats the difference in game on a 3.4 and 4ghz? i cant imagin much difference. Both will run top end of fps and it will be the graphix card that makes the difference.

Whats the difference of a duel core and a quad core at 3.4 and 4ghz on Lost planet? Supreme comander?

Which is the logical choise. All you people keep saying ooo there wont be any quad core games for years. So far most the games i know of coming out will be quad core enabled.

I didn't say there won't be any quad core games, i said when quad core will really be needed, i can understand going quad core if quad core games and application where main stream, but the fact is, they're not, when quad/multi core games and apps become more available i will without doubt upgrade to quad core but by that time they will be, as i said, cheaper, faster, cooler and more energy efficient, and don't forget, not everyone overclocks their system.

The half life 2 engine will be updated over time to support more cores, crysis will use multiple cores.

How effective will it be? no idea, i'd say crysis it would have the most effect on performance.

Would be easier if developers just told us how much of an impact having 4 cores with lower frequency, over 2 with higher frequency would help. Probably if there is gonna be a big difference i cant see it being in that many games for a while yet.

point is core to core speed is almost the same, but the quad has 4 cores.
Kinda just makes it a bit of a no brainer for a lot of us, some people just would rather buy a dual for same price and then buy a quad later.. id rather just buy 1 :D

There are a number of threads over on XS that show 4ghz on the g0 q6600 chips. Some even on air cooling!

Yes but how many are stable? 12hrs prime?

I can boot this B3 into windows @ 450 x 9, but it's like my wife, totally unstable.

Ok its not the fabled '12 hrs stable' but the indications are definately there. It didn't fail, he stopped the test. I'll take that CPU over any E6850 / C2D out there tbh.

It isn't just a one off either as I already said - others are hitting the 4ghz mark and with the right cooling I'm pretty sure would be stable. I speak from experience as I had an E6600 stable @ 4ghz on water so I know when the signs of stability are there at the extreme end of the scale ;)

Don't get me wrong, it does look like a nice chip, but what worrys me, is the number of people who have bought the G0 stepping, and the lack of reviews from people who say they have them.

The one you linked to, is the best I've seen, least he's attempted to prime it.

I'm starting to wonder if G0's are any better than B3's.

I agree there does seem to be a lot of hysteria and over hype regarding the G0 chips much the same with the 'B' stepping E6600's. But, and it is a big BUT the g0 chips seem to be running cooler so the requirement for more exotic cooling isn't a neccessity to obtain high clocks as with the B3 ones. Time will tell I guess as they are still much of a rarity atm especially in the UK.

Heres another though not prime stable.

Your missing the point. Why buy 2 cpus just because you want to be able to say oo i waited for the real quad cores.

Im pritty confident that my Q6600 Go overclocked to the max of what ever i can get it at will run most quad games for some time. Considering some are showing 4ghz. Im starting to feel confident for a 3.6 + as i am still skeptical as to how stable those are and i dont like the Vs they are putting through them. But if i can get mine to 3.7 ill be very happy :)

A q6600 at 3.7 should be able to run most quad core games for some time. So why are people getting E6850? I rember when it came out and all these people wre saying ooo quads are for those that wana show off etc. Its just the no brainer choise lol.

If they are getting 4ghz on air... what do you think they would get with water cooling :P or phase :P
